Torrevieja is in mainland Spain, approx an hours drive South of Benidorm. Lots of bars and places to eat and it has a good market which is on every day. There's a nice harbour and a sandy beach, so worth a trip if you have found a reasonably priced holiday.
Hope this helps
PS I've never spotted any used condoms....

I went in 2004, a very nice cheap holiday, good selection of food, terra mitica is worth a visit, and you can swim in a sea of mud, good for the skin etc, and its really warm.

I like the place i go quite alot, its not a package holiday place but where people buy a villa and retire, so its not for the young party goer more for the retired person. They have spend a lot of money on the place it has a great promenade and lots and lots of restaurants, cinema complex ,casino ,water park , bowling ally, a new indoor shopping centre and lots more, if you ever need a taxi let us know as the father inlaw lives there and does airport runs.

I went there last year and the year before, I like it, not sure about the condom comments? saw nothing like that. The beaches are nice, La Zenia was our fave, although it can be a bit rough. Cala Capatain (sp?) is good for the kids, shallow and quite calm. Benidorm is about an hour away, Aqualandia and mundomar is there and worth a visit. Alicante is worth a visit or two, the castle is amazing. We stayed in La Siesta, lots of ex pats there, which can put people off.

oh, and spanish measures of spirits are good = Tip the bottle up, wait till glass is full, stop.

I don't remember much of the evenings there.... lol

Flights with Monarch to Alicante from Birmingham were about the cheapest we could find.

I've been too - was ok but a bit too commercialised for me tbh hun, northern Spain is much better if u got the choice

Saying that..........if u got a cheapy hol then it's worth it

I do agree, depends what you want for a holiday I guess, if you want culture and history, avoid, if you just want cheap and cheerful, beaches and guaranteed sun and temps around 40 in august, go for it. lol

It's a dump, full of crime, pick pockets, bag snatchers etc. etc.

I liked it there, there's no way its "a dump" that's carp. As for crime, its a tourist place, you always get pick pockets in tourist hot spots. I'd feel safer walking around there than I would at home. You just have to be smart like you should always be. Don't leave things on show etc.

Been a couple of times! Friends have a villa there. Its a big place with lots of suburbs. Very Spanish, residential. Great 'cause no beer swilling louts. Have had a fantastic time there.

that is a good comment. I subscribe to the latter point of view:-

An individual person's view of anywhere in Spain has to be subjective.

If you come from a run down East London ghetto you will think Torrevieja is the most beautiful place on earth. If you are from a genteel English country village or coastal resort you will see it as a dirty, filthy, crime ridden dump.

I agree. Been five times to the mainland and people there are just plain miserable and rude once you leave a tourist spot. The islands are much nicer, especially the canaries.

Have too agree - The Canaries are a must for budget holidays. Have been to tenerife twice and cant fault. Went In Jan & May and although not peak season weather was lovely, Longer flight times so with children may be a little problem.
