Does your original hard drive have a connector like the one in the following picture?

If it does, then your laptop uses IDE hard drives, not SATA hard drives and the specs your read must have been incorrect :(

As a solution you could probably buy a SATA to IDE adapter or something from eBay/Maplin/PC World/etc or just return the hard drive to Play and buy a new one..

it has pins kinda like that one but split into two sections one little then a gap and then a bigger set, but the length of each section exactly matches the two sections on the play drive, only diff being the play one has flat connectors and the original the dang pins! ... and its not a regular ide connection!

Maybe it's a custom connection by HP so you can't buy standard SATA hard drives and fit them yourself?

Edit: Just had a little look on Google and a few people say that there is an adapter fitted to the orignal hard drive which you need to take off and transfer to the new hard drive..
There were mentions of it being glued on and being hard to get off...
