A neater solution would be a Tomtom unit with their traffic pack and a bluetooth mobile phone, not only will it check for traffic but it will give you alternative routes as well.

Alternatively it doesn't need to be a laptop, you may be able to find a site which will give you the information you need on a mobile phone internet browser.

Bear in mind though that regardless of the solution you go for, if it's a UK sim card the data charges are going to be reasonably hefty even with small amounts due to the minimum charge. An alternative would be to use a French sim card if there is a pay as you go package with cheap data.

I don't understand why it is a problem? Do you go to a difficult area? Most the time when I get to France, I get on the motorway and manage to stay at 130 km/h for aslong as I can stand. Just did 2300 miles to the south of France and back with travel around and about, the only traffic issue the whole time was when I went into central Paris.
