TRAIN FARES....GGRRRRRRR

OK, I am normally quite savvy like most on here when it comes to getting deals for train journeys. However, sudden family bereavement yesterday and hubbie had to travel today. Booked train ticket online late last night for travel this morning.

Got to station this morning, forgot to bring credit card so could not collect the tickets. Had to buy new tickets.............£15 cheaper than the ones he bought online last night...!. Just spoken to Trans Pennine Rail (in India, of course). They will do a refund but charge £10 admin fee.

So yipee, we gained £5. I can understand admin fee, our fault we should not have forgotten the credit card. What I am really angry about is the huge variation in ticket prices. He thought he was booking the best price ticket last night.

In future, won't bother with online. Will just go to local station and buy the ticket, seems you are much better off.

You have my sympathy.

Blame the Tory government though for fragmenting the rail industry in their attempt to destroy the last union capable of causing them problems. (It certainly wasn't to do with subsidies, since they pour more in now than they ever did. I'm sure the shareholders appreciate it.)

Totally agree. Train networks really hard to negotiate by most of the public. Prices seem a total lottery

Which website did you buy the tickets from online?

megabus.com is cheapest for train and bus tickets, also we have an Althams travel agents in our town and if you book with them it is always at least 50% cheaper than the train station

I looked for fares last week from local station (£1.50 return to Coventry from here) to Southampton. Trainline.com, national rail and megabuus all came up with £79.50 for son and I (with railcard). On a whim I looked at fare from Coventry and got a fare £35 cheaper, so even buying the local bit as an add-on have saved over £30.
The whole system is ridiculous .
A friend recently bought tickets on a morning Virgin train from Birmingham to Milton Keynes, then - ON THE SAME TRAIN - from Millton Keynes to Euston and saved almost £40 by not buying just the one ticket from birmingham to euston - didn't even have to get out of her seat . It's getting to a point that you need to check the fares between every station on the route and then work out the cheapest combination

He went via the Trainline which then takes you to Transpennine to buy the tickets I think. (Liverpool to Newcastle) As I said, we are good at getting deals but last night, very stressed and just booked a ticket because no time to look at ALL the thousands of options, and we still got ripped off by £15 in a matter of hours beween online and the train station price.

The system is a mess. You need the time to look at ALL the options, sometimes that is just not possible

Sorry to hear about your family bereavement.

The added stress is not needed at this difficult time.

Hope you and your family are ok x x
