Transferring files over ethernet

Got my new laptop which I will use for gaming, "problem" is that I have loads of games like Wow that are like 12 gig each or 10 gig for steam so will take hours to install one my one to laptop then loads of updates.

I have a ethernet socket on my main pc and laptop obviously so plan to just transfer the files that way.

Is that my best bet? I assume its easy

If you have an ethernet cable easiest way to check is to look at the ends.

Crossover.

Note the cables are no identical on both ends. As Dcx_badass as said would be quicker with a USB 2.0 compatiable hard drive.

Do you not have them both connected to the network? can't you just transfer them that way?

Although external drive would be quicker

Nah, crossover cables are obsolete now we've got gigabit ports. They auto-detect whether they're hooked up to another PC or to a router, and reroute the wires internally. Might need a CAT6 cable for 1000mbit/s, which should transfer about 6 times faster than a USB harddrive.

The reason I asked if I have networked laptop and desktop before(old ones) and found transferring quite fast and tried wireless transfer and it would of taken hours for what the ethernet did in minutes.

But havent done it in a while, I assume its easy like basically putting it into shared folders then copying and pasting?

Yep. if your going through a router you won't need a crossover cable.

I was actually goin to just connect the laptop to desktop without a router as I have done in past the only issues I remember in past was I had to move everything I wanted to share into the "public" folders which is a bit of a pain as my games are on a seperate internal drive.

I assume that the fact the desktop has Win 7 and Vista on the laptop wont cause many problems?

connect using crossover cable, you should get an APIPA assigned IP address on both machines, then they will be able to talk to each other.

unfortunately these numbers mean nothing on a gigalan network as it's not that fast

you will be lucky to get 26 meg a second on a gigabit network *42 meg is most I have gotten avg is around 26 to 28meg There is no way you are going to get 156meg-192meg a second which would be roughly 6 x usb 2

using a usb external should do 26meg to 32- meg a second

I wonder what your network setup is. For me, I've had sustained 70MB/s-90MB/s transfers over gigabit, Win7 to Win7. I gather from nerdier websites that that isn't too abnormal a number, although the numbers were kinda cheatynumbers, since they were big multi-GB files transferred from Seagate harddrive to Seagate harddrive via a direct Cat6 cable between two fairly high-end systems, which isn't really the best reflection of how performance normally would be. But hey ho.

Roughly 6x USB isn't 156-192MB/s, btw - it's half that. Mind, the data's going between two PCs via the external drive, so it's 30MB/s-ish on, and then 30MB/s back off it too, so about 15MB/s overall, less connecting and disconnecting and moving and over again, and whatever fun anomalies Windows throws up.

Interesting, I'm copy and pasting as we speak and getting about 11mb's via direct ethernet both pc's with Vista Home Premium installed but I am sure I used to get about 45MB/s when transferring between 2 desktops.

Chances are, one of the systems has a 100mbit port, or you're maybe using an old Cat5.

Normal PCs are connected to an 8 port gigabit switch downs stairs a GS108, last port is sent upstairs to another GS108.

Most PC's connected are connected via built in gigalan pcie a couple are using some dlink 10/100/1000 (I rarely use those computers though)

XP_SP3 on this 1st gen E6600 to a 1st gen Q6600 also running XP_SP3 (samsung F1,F2 and F3 drives) in both no jumbo frames as not everything can utilise in network.

What program did you use to measure a 70-90 meg transfer (w7 reporting*) co's If you do a search on google for gigabit you will see practically everyone saying where is their throughput and why are they getting slow speeds (my old 1st gen xboxes on a 10/100 used to get 11,863kb tx on ftp protocol)

I just txed 4.20gig to other machine in 166 seconds 25.90 meg a second* then at 9k frames took longer 313 22 meg a second (windows) ftp would be faster



My usb I can get 32 meg second over usb 2 read and write to pc. Avg of 26 meg a second on usb to a pc with the various usb 2 enclosures/ devices I own.

I just wrote the same 4.20gb file to the usb device @ 25.90 meg the same as my network at 2.46 minutes 166 seconds 4.20/166*1024

Now transfer the 4.20 from the usb file to a new internal hard drive @ 30.94 meg a second as it took 2:19 (139 seconds) to store on internal hd. So my usb on this pc can do 30 meg as I said before. Dunno where you get 15 meg from for usb as if that was the case I would also not be able to burn to a usb device like below
