Travel Insurance - Is It worth it?

just looking around for some insurance and checking out the policies, seems ther are that many get out clauses for the main stuff you require

im thinking its not worth taking out at all or the very basic just covering me for hospital treatment and personal liability......even though this does appear not to cover motorised vehicles.

some polices are £200 excess for claiming £100 item/or travel cash........ridiculous!

thats why i always go for cheapest as would only ever want to be covered for something expensive, although i think that medical card things covers you for hospital stuff anyway, sorry forgot what its called

edited to add the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) thats what its called

you can remove the excess fees but then it makes the policy expensive

get travel insurance, just been on holiday with some friends, mate got put in to hospital and his hospital bill was around £20,000

would rather be paying £100 excess than £20,000

It really depends where you are going, for how long and who you are travelling with, if it's a weekend in Europe I wouldn't bother, but if it's outside the euro zone or you are on an independant budget type holiday then you really must. We are just back from Egypt and had to have "assistance", now we did have travel insurance as it happens because my husband has cancer and is on chemo. but as it happens when the wheels came off and he was really ill Thomsons were absolutely brilliant, along with the hotel who changed our room to a quiet garden room, brought meals and drinks to our room foc and fresh flowers daily, provided taxi transfers and arranged for escorted airport checkin with onward wheelchairs/ambulifts etc. all without costing us a penny or having to make a claim. That said I wouldn't travel with a known medical problem without insurance outside of northern Europe. It's the unexpected that will come back to bite you in the rear ash clouds, car accidents, theft etc. but if you're prepared to stump up without complaining then don't bother just make sure you have adequate medical cover :)

yep can be very expensive if you dont have anything, I've always had travel insurance, I'd rather have the basic then nothing at all. Have you tried Insure & Go not sure how they compare with any current quotes you have had, also there was one on Quidco I was looking at that seemed pretty competitive.

You need travel insurance trust me, in jan it saved me 45k. I had to be flown back business class with medical escort to the uk, and they even flew the misses back with me as well.

i have travel insurance like i said.....i always go for the basic .....just got 53 days in thailand for £13

just saying that ther policies are ridiculous with all the get out clauses/small print....most affer a limit of £200 for 1 item maybe £300.

i only need it for hospital treatment in case an injury on a moped, but it doesnt even cover you for the damage under personal liability.....pretty much everything i would need insurance for isnt covered.

insure and go are expensive for crap cover these days, they were the best when i used them 10 years ago

you need more insurance than the basics! what happens if you brake both your legs, or get a nerological problem when your abroad? you will have to pay for the hospital and the flight back and a madical escort.

People who have claimed have thought it was worth it.

this is the basics.....hospital treatment/repatriation and personal liability.

anything else seems pointless unless you are on a packge holiday that might get cancelled.

i got this plus some other un-needed stuff for £13, dont know how it came to that much as the quote was more than that, but thats all it asked me to pay.

I assume you are going on an independent basis rather than a package holiday.
I would say as an independent traveller outside Europe to make sure you have insurance.
Years back I was travelling with a group in Morrocco. Two got really quite ill with suspected Malaria and another was flown back home after a serious bout of dysentery. Would have got very expensive without insurance.

If you are staying in good accomodation and can be sure of good hygiene you may be ok. But you will be hiring a moped and accidents are not uncommon. I know there are often adverts on the tube for insurance cover for a year and you can take as many trips as you like but cant think of any names off the top of my head.

met a woman in the villa next to mine who slipped in the bathroom and fractured her hip.....hospital treatment was 20,000 bhat a day which is around 400 quids

so yes definitely worth taking just for the hospital cover, anything else is unneccesary though.

deffo worth taking out. my missus mearly skipped it the other week until I said your going away on friday 13th. my mum in her group missed the checkin & then someone nicely pickpocketed her while she was waiting for the train in Barcelona.

shes had to pay a ton excess but is due to get the change of flight money & some her her spends back so was worth a fiver each.

I love the insurance culture in this country is so backwards. People insure everything except themselves. Phone insurance, car insurance, house insurance, appliance insurance, boiler insurance, pet insurance.........yep better to be safe than sorry......... Life and health insurance...... Na don't need those!!!!!
