My son's friend is due to travel to USA in a few days time and is worried about the condition of his passport. UK Border Agency have already mentioned to him in the past that it should be replaced, but will he be ok getting into USA, knowing how difficult they can be? Everything is readable, it's just a bit tatty and he doesn't really have time to get a replacement without going to a passport office and waiting. Pics in next post. Thanks for any advice.

without even seeing the pics,if he has previously been warned then attempting to enter america with it is madness-too risky! he will have to go and wait in the passport office m8-better safe than sorry

No-one can answer this for you, except the Border Official at the time of your friend's son's Border Crossing. I would suggest that if he has already been advised to get a replacement, he perhaps should have done. Consider what he will do if it is rejected... is there time to get a new one now? A wait at the Passport Office is nothing compared to missed flights and lost money...

Unlikely,if its bad he wont be allowed on the plane anyway,as the airlines are fined heavily for letting anyone who may be refused entry travel

Totally his own fault for being a lazy get and not doing something about it when warned.

He had better find the time to go to the passport office, I wouldnt allow your son on a plane with that shabby effort.

My passport was in far better condition than the one in the pics but I still had to get a replacement to be on the safe side when I was going to New York. I asked a travel agent to verify for me and they advised that none of their staff would allow it through to departures as they would be fined had I got to America and been refused entry. I'd used the passport in the same state a year earlier for a trip around Australia but with America they were a lot more stringent at that time. I can only imagine it has gone even more so.

I'd advise them to spend a couple of hours waiting in a queue at a passport office, rather than bemoaning at home they can't go on a holiday they've paid for.

Hope it works out for them.

I think you may find it is too late to get a replacement as you need to leave a week to get one. You cannot get one by going to the Passport Office unless it is a renewal. My son had this problem earlier this year a few days before we travelled when he got his out and found something had spilt on it in a drawer. It was about the same condition or a little worse than yours. As we had no alternative, because the passport office on the phone said it was too late to get a new one, we went to the airport and luckily got through. They looked at it closely and then waved him through.

Was that to the US though?

I would imagine the only reason they'd refuse you entrance is if it looks like its been tampered with. If all there is wrong with it is the fact it looks a bit dog eared then I would think it unlikely he will be refused entry. As WTP says if it is on file however it maybe a different story. He really is a bit daft though considering his warning.

Yes, but he had not been warned before as in the original post.

whats he been doing to it, eating it !? that looks older then the Doomsday book !

OK I can say the following if the photo page even LOOKS less than perfect they WILL give him an EXTREMELY hard time and are prone to refuse entry if ANY of the covering over the photo is even remotely loose or looks like it has been touched. This I know from personal experience!!!
