Travellers!!!!

Morning folks. Need a bit of advice. Friday morning, a band of travellers/gipsies ( I'm being polite :whistling: ) moved onto the wood next door to my house. It's private land owned by the Royal Forestry Society, so am assuming they will be moved on fairly quickly, but does anyone know realistically how long this might take?? I know it can take months/years where it's council land due to the statutory duty on the council to assess need etc ( I know what they flipping need!! ) but believe it's a different matter with private land???

However long it takes them to get a court order and baliffs to move them on.

How much effort are you willing to put into this?

Research former situations like this, see which ways worked best.

Write to Council
Write to MP

Approach local neighbourhood organisations (Hot Fuzz? :))

Privately chat with your neighbours to do the same put the pressure on etc.

I suspect the #1 incentive for the council or any authority to do anything quickly would be for them to be seen to distrupting the peace etc which means proof which means getting neighbours to write detailed letters to whom is needed and the brave pointing cameras at them...

Okay, that's not too bad. At the moment they're keeping themselves to themselves, I guess they know all the ways to stretch out their stay.

The trees might set on fire in the middle of the night.:whistling:

Amusing as that maybe, it'll just start a feud really.

Getting as many people directly affected to write in specifics to the right people will do the most, but I'm biased we've had a few problems, not quite like this and local councils/MPs have helped me/my family in the past.

call the police?

private land which means the owner of the land has to apply to courts to have them removed. This can take a while. However most " travellers" dont hang around long enough till then, they move on. I would write or phone local council though to make them aware.( im sure they already do know) If there is noise or trouble from them you can then phone the police on that issue.
Travellers know the laws better then most.
Ride it out im sure they wont be around long. If they are then sit tight it will have to go through the legal process to get them removed.
Good luck

Good advice, pretty much as I thought, but good to get it confirmed

Grumpy have you checked out your local council website?

Chances are doing a quick search on there will have an advice page on this and if you're lucky a complaint page.

I had to help a friend out once, I won't go into too much detail but just to say I used one of these -

to help them off the land, you have never seen so many people move so fast, when they got to the road, they never even stopped to look for a break in the traffic, they just drove :giggle: Unfortunately 2 caravans were damaged :whistling: but they never did come back..ever

Also a Farmer in West Sussex had them move onto his land and when they objected to his requests to get off the land, they all congregated on the land to form a 'hard' group, so anyone entering the land was intimidated by their presents. So him and a few mates decided to go and see them, except they stopped at the gate of the field and dug a big ditch across the entrance (also taking away all the muck) so that they could not leave. 5 days later they begged him to fill in the hole but after he had told them to clean up the field and leave it like they found it :w00t: that worked as well.

Of course there is one sure way of getting rid of them and it does not involve firearms but I am not going to say it here :whistling:

Invite your local Wiccan Coven, to perform a few ceremonies near by, there is a long history of bad feeling between witches and travellers. and if they know that the "dark arts" are being practiced tehy will soon go and bother someone else.

Also works very well when approached by a peg/heather seller in your local town centre. Just say "your brave, pause for a moment then say, a tinker selling to a witch" and smile, as the flee in the other direction.
