A friend of my Mum's is travelling around the world later in the year and wants to keep in touch by sending pictires, emails etc etc to friends from all the countries they are visiting.

As well as the normal Australia and America, they are also visitng India, China etc.

Is it best they invest in a top of the range Blackberry/Smartphone that is Quad band? Someone suggested a notebook but I'm not sure the best way?

As mentioned, they want to be able to send reports/updates of where they are, what they've been doing etc etc

Any advice gratefully received.

My folks get by okay with text messaging and the occasional stop-off at an internet cafe. They're everywhere.

Finding an internet cafe or an open wifi and some text messages. I have travelled on business and find some countries very expensive to send data or you just can't without a data account. Roaming costs a fortune. Load pictures onto a flash drive and send when you get a chance.

my sisters friend used an internet website, bit like a facebook i think and it will tell everyone where you are, and i think you could write blogs or info on it and upload pictures etc.

Is that what you mean?

That's quite a good idea. Assume they could take their own netbook and then find some wifi spots to post to thing like facebook?? Do you know the site??

im not sure this is the exact one as ive only just searched google this minute, but its the same idea. you can also show on a map which countries you've visited and going to next which i think is a great idea.

Our family friends just got back from a year of travelling the world, the had no problem with internet cafes in any of the places they went.

yeah i did this 3 years ago and we had spent 4 mths in australia and 2 mths in new zealand amongst others and just brought our mobiles out and bought a sim card out there and it worked out grand as for internet and emails internet cafes are everywhere and they burnt our pictures to cd for us and then we were able to send emails and attach what ever we wanted. No need for all the heavy technological expense to be honest...........

Unless you are going right off the beaten track you will be hard pushed to not find a Internet cafe in every town.

We took a international phone sim which there are an abundance of online and make calling reasonably cheap. I also purchased a Vodafone sim when in australia as if you top up $29 they give you $240 of use and $49 gives you $500 of use and all calls no matter where in the world at 10cents.

You can also buy roaming data sims that act the same, i.e. cheap roaming but only for data, i found the joint sims i.e. phone and data worked out really expensive.

My cousin's daughter has just got a job on a cruise ship and they keep in touch by skype, I've no idea what this is, how it works, or even if I've spelt it right, but basically it means they can see each other while they're talking and my cousin is afraid of computers so it can't be that hard to fathom out.
