Travelling to USA

Just a warning to anyone travelling to USA you need to fill out a ESTA form which basically allows you to fly to the US. There are loads of sites through google offering this service and charging from £12 to £100! This service is completely free of charge and available here https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/. This isn't a visa it just allows you on the flight list and is compulsory.
Posting this as I read an article about it in Which magazine and thought I should share the info.

Hardly breaking news, it's been this way for quite a while now.

Well my parents got caught out by it and I haven't heard about it so breaking news for me.

its very easy to do. i did it before travelling to florida earlier this month. you also need to provide info to the tour operator before you can fly. most will do this online or you can do it whilst checking in.

I actually didn't realise about esta till the day before travelling, but it was still fine

It is old news (I did this for a trip to Florida in July last year), but in my opinion it really hasn't been advertised enough. There are plenty who still don't know about it.

Makes you appreciate the freedom of movement that comes with EU membership, doesn't it?

Oh and I forgot a full 3D naked scan of your body. ;-)

The online esta thing was supposed to replace filling out the visa forms etc on the plane. Unfortunately, it's never happened...

If you book flights to america either online or at a travel agents etc, whoever you book the flight with should make you aware of it...

Yes they told my parents they need an ESTA form and to just google it - try it comes up with loads of sites before you get to the official Government one - they were also told by their travel agent that they would have to pay for it, looks like I will be making another phone call or sending an email to TA.

in fact if you google 'ESTA' its the first link that comes up, after a sponsored link of course!
#13
on my google search it was 5th link in the list!

Few years old now, and you still have to do forms on the plane. I think it's ignorant to not know about it, I checked the Visa info for everywhere I went. Like Australia you have to buy it in advance (£10).

My parents are elderly not ignorant and took what the travel agent said as being correct. If you ask for advice when you book your travel arrangements you expect it to be correct. Anyway they won't be using travel agents anymore now they are on the web and can make and check arrangements themselves. Just thought this might save somebody else the inconvenience and expense. Wish I hadn't bothered when I see comments like yours.
