Travelling in train from some intermediate station

Hi,
Need help regarding my train travel.
I bought a train ticket from Harrogate to London.
Can I board same train from Leeds instead (of course same train for which I bought ticket)? Will the automatic gate open at the Leeds station or will the staff allow me to enter?
Alternatively, If I buy some cheap ticket to just enter the platform, then can I board the same Harrogate-London train when when it calls on Leeds?

Many thanks for the response.
Cheers!!

I think there was something on the TV about something similar last year. Somebody bought a ticket from A to C, but got off one stop early at B

Assuming it was OK and it was a shorter journey, all would be well in a normal world.

He was told the ticket was invalid, so had to pay again.

Be careful !

Normally, this is not allowed and written clearly in the small print of the ticket. Better check with the train company if not found on the small print.

Agree, the ticket is invalid if you use it for any journey other than what you have paid for, even if you are using on a shorter journey.

Just do it, - If you need to get a cheap ticket, get a Leeds to Pudsey ticket...

Then just get on the train....I regular get off at a station early, and get on at a station later and never had any issues.

Whats the face value of the ticket though ?

Will be risky as you are going against the booking terms. Also conductor is likely to know you have got on @ Leeds and can charge you full price for the fare.
Safer just to get to harrogate

Thank you all lovely people for the kind advice.
RickT The face value for return ticket from Harrogate to Kings Cross is £10. It was on deal few days back.
Given the advice (to avoid risk), I have purchased day return ticket from Leeds to Harrogate (£8). So I plan to catch the train from Harrogate instead of intermediate station Leeds where I reside. But I shall disembark at Leeds on my return journey. I plan to use my unutilised Harrogate to Leeds part of ticket to get out of the gates at Leeds station. I hope this will work.

Thanks.
