How long did it take you lot to find you're first job. I have been looking for about 8 months now and still nothing, iv had interviews but never been took on. I have been in education most of my life up untill a few months ago, then i had to go on JSA (which i hate)
or anyone have any idea about how i should go about obtaining a job.
I think a few of the problems i have are, i dont really look all smart, i have a few piercings, which i can take out and replace with clear bars and "un natural" hair colur, thing is i do not want to change who i am for a job.
Any suggestions as not having a job is really getting me down and i hate having nothing to do all day

if you have been in education do you have a qualification to do a set thing???

Perhaps a part time job in any of the big retail outlets. Just so you have some sort of career record.

Be quick, retail will probably be filling their Christmas positions as we speak! Work hard, make an impression and they might keep you on afterwards.

Unfortunately you are genuinely at a disadvantage due to your personal choices of appearance.

The Spurs job will be available again soon.:whistling:

Yeah, I saw Argos had a poster the other day looking for Xmas staff, you have to say tho its a shame people cant dress/look how they want without being discriminated against for it!!

Yeah it is, that is my main problem if i dident look the way i do i would probs have a job by now, i know its stupid not changing because i am desprate, but i dont want to change who i am for a job i probs wont have for that long. There not allowed to discrimnate, but most places do but give other reasons for not hiering you

I would agree with this advice.

Don't let it get you down Vampiress, I have been looking for a job for 2 months and have qualifications coming out of my ears and look pretty average. Only had one interview. Its a bad time to be looking for work in the current climate.

I wish you good luck

why how do you look out of interest ?
#12
I'm in a similar position, been looking for a job actively since August but it's tough. I don't have much experience and that's probably where I'm falling short. I've thought of volunteering though. Being on JSA is really demoralising. : /

Most recent qualifications I got are A Levels and (I think) I'll be resitting my uni course next summer but I don't really want to go back into education.

Good luck anyway. :)

I don't mean to sound nasty but I don't think your appearance is helping you in your attempt to get a job. Most employers are looking for people or a 'regular' appearance, they already have an image in their head of what they want their employee to look like and its not of an extravagant appearance like yourself! You are probably being discriminated because of your image and has nothing to do with your ability/personality.

I know the way i look is affecting getting a job, i can tell as soon as i walk in the room and the interviewer looks shocked about the way i am

Have you tried a local music shop or even the shop where you buy a lot of your clothes?

apply for a bar job either in a night club (anti-social hours eeesh) or try a hotel - nice tips, especially around xmas where drunk guests get to know you! (been tipped 20 quid before and bar staff normally get to keep their tips at end of night)

also, if you ever apply somewhere and they never get back, keep ringing them until they get off their sad arses to bother tellin you the good/bad news. i did and managed to get a waiter's job in a hotel.

(also, lol!, if you do fancy hotels, just walk into a stream of them asking for application forms as they are always aching for staff.)

I dont mean to sound nasty but you will more than likely have to change your hair colour for permanant nearly every company doesnt want purple hair.

As for your piercings well if you at least take them out during your interview makes you looks a bit more like the average person. It might help.

Do you wear a suit to job interviews or jeans and tshirt? If you wear jeans and tshirt i would definatly recommend you get a suit.

Do you research the company before arriving at the interview? that might be a good idea as it shows you have made the effort and want the job more than the last person they interviewed....

Just a few pointers to help you out,

If i could i would have my hair how i want it but well work is work and people have to look professional.
