Do I need a hotel and mobile units TV Licence?

This includes the use of a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, computer or mobile phone.

Each unit of accommodation, mobile unit or other area in which a TV receiver is installed or used must be covered by a TV Licence.

A hotel and mobile units TV Licence will cost you less than a regular TV Licence.

Been like that for a long time.

You need a licence for something that can receive a live broadcast.

You need a TV Licence to use any television-receiving equipment to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV. These include programmes on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, cable and satellite television. Television-receiving equipment includes:

•TV sets
•set-top boxes
•DVD recorders
•video recorders.
You don't need a television licence if a TV set cannot receive TV programmes and is used only:

•for close circuit monitoring
•for watching pre-recorded videos or DVDs
•as a computer monitor – see under heading You don't use your television set or other device to watch or record broadcast programmes.
You do need a licence to watch TV on a mobile phone or other battery-operated device.

You need a license for anything that can receive tv signals? I'm using my TV for xbox 360 atm. I thought you just need the license if you're using it for receiving the signals.

No you don't if your using it only for that, or a DVD player or something.

TV licence used as a noun is spelt without the S.

A TV licence is not required when using a laptop if the feed is not live. For example, BBC's iPlayer viewing does not require a TV licence. I don't know what TV catchup is but if the feed is delayed by more than a certain time than the live feed there is no requirement for a TV licence. I can't remember what the threshold is but I am sure people will find it on a search engine.

They cannot detect broadcasts from LCD TVs. With CRT TVs, EM emission could be detected but whether the detector vans in the past had the capability to detect them or not I don't know.

TV licensing usually have a database of people who purchased brand new TVs in order to determine if a household is likely to own a TV or not.

Thing is, with commercial TV, the money has to come from SOMEWHERE

OK, it comes from advertisers.

How do they get the money to pay for their advertising?

They take a teensy bit of the money they make from whatever it is they're flogging.

So,where does that money come from?

Their customers.

Follow that back along the food chain and, sooner or later, that money comes from us schmuks.

I can't remember the exact figures (Can't be a**ed to look up), but I once checked the number of households in the UK and the total revenue from TV advertising.

Worked out to almost exactly the same per household as a TV licence.

The thing is, each household was paying that incredibly hidden "tax", WHETHER THEY HAD A TV OR NOT! :w00t:

it's licence..

#37
for all it costs ffs , and u can pay it monthly. its surely not worth the hassle and the penalties
#38
http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/index.jsp

A TV Licence costs £142.50 for colour and £48.00 for black and white.

not worth hassle, just set up a monthly DD with them,I pay once a yr by DD,but they do monthly plans I'm certain.

I think SomeBloke's point was that whilst plenty of folk complain about the TV licence being unfair, the reality of where commercial TV funding comes from is a whole lot less fair.

And I gotta agree!

Also what is rarely know is that you dont need a license if you are using say a digital tuner on a laptop if it runs off batterys but the second you plug it in you cant, similar for portable tvs.
