Still think one of the best tv programmes i saw was regenesis.

West Wing definitley - best series ever.

you buy complete series box set now for not too much - £40 on amazon. Do a search on HUKD and sure you may find it cheaper. I think play had it quite cheap for a while.

You are missing much goodness by thinking Supernatural is girly. It may start off a bit formulaic monster of the weekish but is now must see tv for me.

sci-fi =
battlestar galactica - awesome
Fringe - very strange but rather good

bit more serious=
Breaking Bad = brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!!!!!! have to wait 6 months for next season though :(
weeds - brilliant, diverse, hard to fault.

a bit of comedy =
eastbound and down - will only appeal to fans of will ferell style season 1 is good season 2 sucks kinda

a lot of comedy =
arrested development - clever, not what you would expect from Americans
30 Rock - quite good but wont appeal to all

From your list your other half has similar tastes to me so can i suggest the following programs

Criminal Minds - very good about an FBI team that hunt serial killers
House - Hugh Laurie doctor drama, very good
Burn Notice - about an ex spy in Miami
Lie to Me - American drama about a guy who can read peoples emotions, well worth watching
Boston Legal - Legal drama which has a comic slant to it, its got James Spader in it,

Burn notice is absolutely aces!

It's Always sunny in Philidelphia

Patrick Swayze's last series 'The Beast' was quite good, although his death means that only 13 episodes were made. I don't think it was ever released here, but if you hunt around Amazon you might be able to find a Region 1 import.

Bones - absolutely love this
Lie to me - is great
Boston Legal - is nuts
True Blood - is amazing
24 - loved this
House - great too
The Office(American) - starts off slowly but is so funny

My OH and I have on box set

The Wire
Sopranos
Lost
Lie to Me
Entourage
(Sex and the City- albeit only I have really watched this!)

I want to watch The West Wing & The Shield, but just bought the OH Prison Break from HMV instore. Had some good reccomendations from people I know, and was marked £49, but went through at £39.

ETA: I bought Prison break on 19th Dec, so should be still valid

Mad Men, Mad Men, Mad Men

Best show to come out of America since The Wire.

Also if he liked The Wire and Generation Kill there is a mini series called The Corner that David Simon also did you could pick up.
