I've moved into an area of Wales that seems to be about 20 years behind the norm when it comes to tv reception. Although we have Sky, Freeview does not yet exist and i had a far better quality of picture on the black/white portable on an indoor aerial i had when i was a child (Oh for the days of watching snooker in B/W).

So I am thinking of buying a signal booster to at the very least improve my picture quality?

Therefore my question is.... Do signal Boosters actually improve pic quality or do they just improve the ability to pick up a signal? Also if anyone has one would you recommend buying one?

As for digital TV,signal booster only inproves ability to pick up a signal if it is low.Quality will be the same on digital TV broadcast.

not true. My freeview used to break up all the time. fitted a £9 argos booster and now its perfect. Shame there is hardly anything decent to watch ;)

I am an electrical engineer. It will boost the signal, as it is an amplifier, this is called gain.

However if the signal is very low then there might not be much useful signal to boost.

Gain is valued in db so the higher the db the higher the gain of the unit and the more it will amplify the signal. I would suggest buying one from, say Argos so you can take it back if needed.

Good luck

My parents bought a signal booster from focus as some of their freeview channels weren't great. They now get more channels and a much better picture so they do work. It cost about a tenner I think.
We only live a mile down the road from them but at the bottom of a hill and when I asked about reception in our area the man in the shop actually laughed! Guess we'll be waiting a while then................!

u have checked out the antenna i hope? my loft one got knocked over after a bird got in there lol.
Make sure its not pointing wrong way or rotten connections, as stated amps can only boost weak signals so far, if there is any interference it will boost that too
