lots of people say that EU legislation allows for a longer standard warranty because if a tv died within a couple of years it clearly isn't fit for purpose.

as per above if it breaks you can claim under sales of good act. we have previously done this with a 2 year old fridge freezer from comet and got a replacement of a newer model and a digital photo frame from jessops a few months ago which stopped working after 18 months again we got full refund on gift card

EU legislation is nothing to do with the UK, we are covered by SOGA which is better :)

Check your paperwork or with the seller first, it may come with a longer guarantee. I bought mine from amazon and it came with 3 years (had to register but this was easy).

Not sure it's worth paying for an extended warranty, they are pretty expensive and have all kinds of clauses. If it was me I'd take a chance and not bother.

Only Sony can extend their warranty.

I know this might not be of help now but in future, if you purchase electrical items with a Nationwide credit card, you get a free extended 12 month warranty.
