I have a friend who is a film critic and writes independent reviews which he gets paid pretty well for-he also has his own podcast on itunes-you can search for "montage film podcast" on itunes-his name is robert duffin.

maybe not the sort of job you are looking for but hopefully it may be of use-if not,no worries.

First things i would ask are.

*Do you have a website?
*Showreel?
*Do you have an active presence online in the film industry? ie: forums, social networks, blogs
*Do you have a network?

If you can self brand yourself you become a much stronger candidate for any work in the film industry.

Call every production company you can find and see if any have jobs as runners. That's about the only way to get started. Once you've got real experience you can either move up the company or apply for other jobs with other company's.

Do you know which area you want to work in? and what area are you best in ?

My daughter graduated last year and she's still looking (but is getting work for most of the month with a number of company's), its hard out there at the moment.

Well done on your degree, I work for ITV I know its not the film industry but I do have some very good contacts here and in the US and would help you as much as I can there.

What area you looking to get into? I would advise you very differently depending on the type of area you are wanting to work in ie technical, production etc.

PM me if you want I'll send you my email address to help you.

I have a website/vimeo/flicker page for films and photography, i'm currently in the process of finishing up my showreel which will be online in the next few weeks, as for an active presence online on forums social networks and blogs i don't, Can you recommend and to look at?

I'm trying to build a network of people who i have worked with as i'm trying to do everything and anything in the media industry to get me started.

I'm in the process of going through production companies and sending my cv off to them, along with applying to BBC north which is moving to manchester and applying for things that are coming up on the guardian, however the guardian does not really cater for film specific rolls.

Thank's very much nwressell, I'm ideally looking to get into the production side of film, i want to be hands on making the films and program's as i've specialised in single camera. my main aim is camera/directing, however at the moment i know you can't be to picky so i'm looking for anything that will give me a foot in the door.

Usual route is to go in as a runner, Warning though it is a total dogsbody role, and my mate who is now a Producer starting as a runner for LWT, and some of the tasks she had to do bordered on the ridiculous to the criminal.
One of the actors would demand a litre of vodka at 10am, and another would like a gram of coke before he could start work.

Another mate is an accountant in the film industry, and some of the perks he gets are amazing.

Give up and go into teaching!!

Only kidding, give it your all to get where you want to be... then go into teaching if that fails.
