Hey guys,

I'm trying to write an essay for a class but can't think of any interesting topics/events. I have just had 10 hours of lecture and my mind is dead.

The assignment is as follows:
A piece of writing that makes a claim and that incorporates multiple outside texts (14-15 pages). In this instance, you will choose any event in history, find worthwhile sources that show disagreement on this event, and in a 14-15 page paper, assess and compare the two sources. You are looking at one historical event from multiple perspectives and engaging these voices in an argumentative conversation

My ideas so far have been the Falklands war, DRM, the smoking ban and the American Revolution. These are ok but I wanted something a little bit different. Any ideas?

PS. Google wave invites for all who help :)

I did something similar recently, and did the Armenian genocide. It's not an obvious choice, but there's plenty of information out there about it, and many parallels can be drawn with modern genocide in the world. It worked well for me anyway!

You could be very controversial and do the holocaust....might struggle with the worthwhile sources though... Other than that, I think controversial is the way to go...like the bible as already suggested..

First Gulf War? Cuban Missile Crisis? Cold War?

Is that...is it...is that a serious and helpful post? Where's the sarcasm? What have you done with the real dcx_badass?!

I did want to look into something to do with religon. I'm at a US Uni and my whole class is super conservative. I wanted to annoy some of them!

Well genuinly the more controversial, the more you will have to discuss.. so religion might well be the way to go. Remember to stay impartial though..

The 'founding of the NHS' should drive them into political hysteria given the present situation!!

Setting up of the League of Nations - controversial at the time and loads of sources.

Something contemporary?

There was a big stink recently about BT intercepting the browsing of their customers, analysing it to feed them adverts.

A lot of folk didn't like it, saying it was like having your postman open your mail and reading it, to decide what leaflets to bung thru your door

BT trialled it twice - without asking!

A few techie savvy users thought something was going on and asked BT, who told 'em nowt was up.

It got as far as the European Commissioner taking legal action against the UK govt because they did nowt about it.

Richard Clayton did a deep techie analysis too:
