Not sure this is the right forum so please forgive.

Does anyone know if anybody is close to developing software to unlock the Nokia N80, I don't want to have to pay networks for doing it, I even heard 3 won't do it full stop.

You cannot unlock those sorts of phone, what you can do is flash upgrade the firmware to a generic version, which removes all the branding etc. Its very easy to do but nerve wracking the first time :)

and if you apply the firmware the phone will just unlock?

The locking is due to the firmware version installed by the phone supplier. Install generic firmware and there is no lock. :-D These new phones using Symbian software are like computers, you have Windoze 95 installed and then 'upgrade' to Windoze 98 means you've effectively changed the operating system although it allows you to keep your old files. With these phones your old files are on the SIM and the memory card so you're changing the operating system. The other difference with phones and Windoze is that Microsoft deploy software patches and Service Packs to 'fix' problems but the phones don't, they deploy a new version complete with fixes. Nokia are now allowing firmware upgrades via the website (and a USB cable) and some phones upgrades now give the ability for FOTA (Firmware Over The Air). However Nokia upgrades like this will deploy the upgrade relevant to your service provider unless you're using a generic firmware version.
I suppose the question now is how you get your hands on generic firmware and a guide on how to use it. I don't think I'd be allowed to post a link in this site but you could Google for BB5 reaper 2006.
