  You forget to mention the phone has to be rooted and the only way to do that is flashing a custom kernel which roots phone at same time. (unless you have a pre-release S2 in which case you may be able to get round this).

  Yea Ive done it it works, but its not something that should be posted.
  
  Basic steps are:
  
  1. Install custom kernel which installs recovery software and roots phone (Guide on XDA site with list of custom kernels).
  2. Download Chainfire unlocking app from market.
  3. Run app which should give you unlocking code, takes few mins.
  4. Restart phone with sim from different network. Try the code once and only once.
  
  Also gives you option to install custom ROM now phones rooted but I havent bothered as S2 stock 2.3 rom is fine I think.
  
  Edit: Also worth noting this probably voids your warranty as you've flashed a custom kernel. Unless you flash stock kernel back, although not read into that.

  I dont have an account with o2 and didnt need one as i`m on a three contract, this was pretty much instant. and i didnt feel i needed to list in detail what needed to be done, as that`s the whole poing of providing a link?
  
  maybe this was not a deal (i was unsure what section to post it) but i just want to give them some extra support as they have worked to make a tool that helped me.
  
  sometimes its nice just to post things here you find "MIGHT" help others.
  
  Yes there are other ways to unlock. but this just gives people another option.

  any simple way to root the SK17 without jumping through all the custom flashing hoops?
  I don't particularly need root just need a network unlock to use alternative network sim.
  Most online unlockers want £25-35

  Is the phone rooted? If not then thats why it didnt work. If it is reboot and try app again. If still no joy try the manual way looking at the .bin file as posted here:

  It was rooted but only tries that app once.
  
  I managed to unlock it using an alternative unlocking app (the old galaxy S one which now works for S2).
  
  I've sold the mobile to a relative, so no longer have it.

  Well yesterday I got another email which contained the unlock code which worked and didn't cost me a penny, so thanks spruceyb :)
