Unlocking iPhone 3g

Hi, i've been offered an iphone 3g, and was wondering if its possible to unlock it yourself? Its locked to o2 at the moment, and i'm on orange so if i decide to buy it i would need to factor into the price, any extra i will need to pay out to get it unlocked.

the person getting rid of it has bascially said they wont be bothering to get it unlocked, so i'm wondering if i can do it, or if it has to be done by o2?

thanks to anyone kind enough to reply!

No, unlocking usually refers to permanent network unlocking, once done means your iPhone will accept any sim from any operator,,, jailbreaking means you can install a software fix that will allow you to bypass iTunes for software and a temporary unlock, remove the jailbreak and your phone returns to the locked state..

:thumbsup:Nope Jail breaking is using third party software to modify the software iphone do not approve
The trouble is you some times find that when the software is upgraded it resets the phone to original setttings

If the original owner can arrange it its much easier

You don't have to be the original owner to get it officially unlocked through o2 website. I've done it. Costs like £15 from memory.
