I keep getting phone calls from some poxy call centre. I let the answering machine take them and all I hear is a sort of brrrrr sound. Even if I answer the phone nobody on the other end speaks. Oh and the numbers always withheld. Is there any way I can stop this?

register with the telephone preference service

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

takes a while to set up and only works with companies which are registered but will take your details off a lot of lists!

other option as per above website .......

If you have been troubled by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent Callgard Service on 0870 4443969.

These calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls.

Sign up for http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ Telephone Preference service, or sign up to BT privacy here which gives you free caller ID and registers you for the TPS. Also a service called choose to refuse that BT offer which will allow you stop the calls by barring the number (even if it's hid behind a witheld). A charge is made for choose to refuse but not BT privacy ( as long as you are a BT customer).

Don't hang up the phone.
They cannot redial until you hang up ... might teach them a lesson.

Hi Shengis,

Yes there is a way to stop this, I used to get this all the time, fax machines calling me and then other company's. Thing is once one company has your number they pass it round all the other company's and you then end up with lots more.

i telephoned BT to tell them about this, as sometimes my line would then be engaged with an incoming fax call, and in the event of an emergency would not be able to make a 999 call or which ever..............n e how, They signed me up to something that you are entitled to FREE as a BT customer and they send a letter to all company's to tell them to take your number of there lists. i think that it can take up to a month for this to work, but is well worth the phone call. They do send you a letter explaining it all.

I hope that this helps, and of course if your not with BT i am sure that other network providers will provide something similar

They can it's the originator that can clear the call.

This landline or mobile phone the calls are being called on?
I ask this, since i am with pipex, formerly bulldog and i have with-held number reject so if you with-hold your number, you are kindly asked to redial.
Since i never have given my number to anyone anyways i can safely just ignore all calls to it.
If it is mobile phone, not sure what you can do alas

you can use all of the above, but as soon as you fill in for a quote and pop your number in, say for online insurance or something your back to square one

That's ok then, been meaning to contact you for the last few days mate. Give me another couple ;-)

Right quick update. Wife called the BT nuisance phone call line and they've basically said tough, can't do nada. Apparently when it says 'we do not have the callers number' it means its from an international source and they can't block them. As I don't know anybody from an 'international source' they're all bloody spammers so I want them all blocked. BT say they cant !?!! (sorry charles lol). Won't more like as its easy revenue for them. How hard is it for them to tell their computer NO.

Slightly wound up now.

Edit: Done the TPS thing MANY times, and MPS. Grrrrrr.

its these damn call centres that automatically dial 10 numbers at once so that they have a better chance of picking up, the other 9 are just left hanging on the phone with no response. By doing this the operater is not wasting time waiting for a single caller who may or may not be home. Its about time the government cracked down on this sort of thing.

Perhaps they are cold? From your next post stating its an international call - perhaps its Santa wanting to know your Christmas list!!!:whistling:

Been there, done that with BT. When I got this phone number, it obviously had been used previously as a Fax Line. The only thing they offered was a change of number.

In the end and after registering with TPS and still getting them, they eventually did get me to log any calls and times and they said they tracked them and phoned to get them to stop. Still get them now - but few and far between. It was hell at first though - numerous calls at 3am that kept re-dialing. Had to disconnect the phone in the end until the morning. That was what swung it in the end I think (and kids being woken that need to go to school after a good nights sleep!)

Just ask BT for a new telno or switch provider. A bit of hassle but a guaranteed solution.

What makes me laugh is they say they can't block the calls. Well what the bloody hell are they charging people £4 a month for the service that DOES block calls for then?? Does that not work at all by the way? Money for a service you can't provide is it? *******s!
