My laptop just stopped working, it won't power on properly, the power lights come on and the hard drive seems to be trying to start up repeatedly but the screen is totally blank.

It is a compaq Presario V6000, runs XP and less than 2 years old, it was in perfect condition and never been dropped or damaged in any way.

I have tried to power drain it and restart it, even tried to use another monitor to see if it was the screen that was faulty but no luck. I checked all the usual connections and all seem fine.

I am a bit worried that the Mother Board has failed and the laptop only came with a 1 year warranty from Currys.

I contacted Compaq/HP and asked for advice but i am waiting for a response.

Any clever person got any ideas / advice for me please?

ok you say that the hdd light come on and does it stay on, also when you power up the unit if you look at the screen does is change in anyway ie its black before you trun it on and then you turn it on does the screen slight flicker, the reason i ask its because some times the harrness cable does stop the unit from what we call posting.

I've been working with these units for over 3 years now

cheers
ps have you move the unit because the memory may just want reseating,

Ok, tried it again,

Switched on : normal lights for power come on, I can hear the Hard drive try to start for about 2 seconds, then nothing for 30 seconds and no activity at all on the screen.

After every 30 seconds the lights flash off then on again really quickly and i hear the Hard drive try to start again then nothing.

This repeats every 30 seconds.

I don't think the memory needs reseating as i checked it quickly just incase!

Thanks for your help and advice, greatly appreciated!

maybe the memory is faulty, try another memory module if you can, I have repaired hundredsof laptops and the symptoms of failed memory are the same as you have described.
