Updated: HMDI - DVD, not receiving a picture on Western Digital Media player or DVD Player.

I ordered and received a HDMI/Component cable from Deal extreme, but there was no signal received when I connected it up.

So i'm looking for a single cable that will carry audio directly to my TV without the need for external speakers/5.1 etc. It's a HD ready TV (720p only), but does not have hdmi socket.

VGA/DVI/Component are my options.

Theres rep-a-waiting for the first person that suggests the place i order from ;)

OP - instead of just specifying what the source is (i.e HDMI), what exactly *is* the device? The same goes for your TV - what make/model is it?

Fair enough.

Current source is a Samsung HD-DVD player that is (or should be used) as an upscaling unit.
I will potentially be ordering the Western Digital Media Player too.

TV is 19" Samsung synchmaster 940mw.

On relfection, could i in fact use hdmi to DVI cable for picture, then a simple set of red/white stereo leads for audio. 2 cables i know, but might do the trick.

this is the rear of the western digital player. i have the same conenctions on the dvd player too.

Well looking at the bottom of the display:

I'd say that's a 3.5mm stereo input. therefore, you MIGHT be ok to get a L/R Phono to 3.5mm stereo lead in order to output the sound. I say MIGHT because you'll have to see whether the HD-DVD player/ Media unit will output audio from the phono even when you're using the HDMI port. From experience it will (I had the same when I first had SkyHD and only had a DVI port on my TV).

You should still be ok - there's audio L/R out there via phono, so a cable from these to the TV (phono to audio jack as before) will do the job.

Grrr tried a HDMI cable with DVI adaptor from the dvd player to th TV - all i get is intermittent signal, never actually getting a picture.

Have you got another HDMI cable (or a way to test this one) ?

The HDMI cable was taken from my BluRay player in the front room so does work

Are there different types of hdmi-dvd adaptors? I used the one that came with my ati4850 gfx card, though i imagine the technology is the same,

I think after a bit more research it might be the monitor.
Some places say yes and others say no as to whether it supports HDCP or not.

My 940mw model is stated as supporting it, but apparently it's the 940bw model that actually does.

I think yours does support it : http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-televisions/414659-samsung-syncmaster-940mw-hdmi-problem.html

In the case above, it was a TV issue.

I've a feeling it may be the ATI HDMI/DVI adapter. ATI graphics cards can output audio via DVI and their adapters will be designed for this function too. I suggest you're probably better to buy a DVI/HDMI cable or a generic DVI/HDMI adapter.

Many thanks for all the help Guru. Have repped you. If i could add more i would certainly do so.

I know 100% that the DVI socket on the LCD works fine as i had a PC rigged up to it a year or so ago, and the TV has had very little use since then.

I'll check around for a cable i can get hold off quickly. Think the bro in law might have one.
I'll report back with progress ;)

The DVI cable recieved does not work with the DVD player/TV combination, but strangely enough, does work with the HDMI output on my Studio 15 lappy. I get a nice clear picture through the DVI socket.

This obviously indicates an issue with the DVD player, though it has worked HDMI to HDMI on my main TV (another Samsung).

Oh well. I've got a Western Digi Media player being delivered tomorrow, so as long as it works with that i'll be happy.

I'll probably plump for a component cable for the DVD player.

Ok so i got my Western Digi Media Player and it works fine on my main TV using HDMI-HDMI.

But i'm still getting no picture on my Samsung 940MW. using a dedicated HDMI - DVI cable.
(same intermittent signal - no signal - but never recieving a solid picture)

Situtation now is that the cable works with my Lappy, but not with the DVD player or the Media player.
The TV does support HDCP.

Can anybody help any further? It's really got me stumped.

Thanks a million.

Can I ask if you're unplugging the TV from the power point each time you're trying a new device? HDCP handshaking can be a tricky business on some TVs and you may need to do this to 'reset' the connection each time.

Hmmm, not tried that. Though when i got a signal from the Laptop, it was directly unplugging it from the dvd player. Not unplugging the TV though.
