I have an 03 ford focus, since I got it in May the car has been hard to get into reverse. Now I cant get into reverse at all. The fluid was leaking apparently according to my boyfriend, but he has topped that up. Anyway, now i cant get into reverse at all. Car parked at a friends but I need help! Boyfriend not sure what else to do. He is looking at the gear selector and trying to adjust that, but he says I may need a garage. I dont like garages, any ideas what it could be?

Don't know, but make sure you don't turn into a one-way street - you've had it then!!!!

Could be clutch, I struggled with reverse for a while, it got worse and stopped working - bit like yours sounds, took it to garage and foundthe clutch had gone. Are you in AA or RAC? They can usually tell you what it is wif you call them out,
#3
I don't think you've any choice but to get it to a garage.

You should've sorted it out ages ago.

thanks. I dont want the garage taking advantage of me, being a woman. Clutch seems to be ok

If you have breakdown cover with RAC or AA, ask them to come out, they may be able to fix it, as it may just be summat simple, but if they can't........atleast they will tell you what it is, then you will know for sure.

or go to www.rac.co.uk
or www.theAA.co.uk

and join it costs £29-38, ok in the long run aswell.

No my bf said it was ok and that I should push down the clutch more. I never thought anymore about it. Car cost me enough only 3 months ago and it has been problem after problem. I may contact the guy who sold me it as it has more problems

So was mine but it was something to do with the internal workings of the clutch or the plate or something, I was convinced it couldnt be the clutch so was stunned when they rang to say it was the clutch,

Seems your boyfriend has no idea at all.

If it was a private sale, don't be offended if the buyer tells you do "Do one".

No it was a trader I got it from - only 3 months ago (bought 2nd may)

Thats what you get for buying a ford :)

It could be the clutch on its way out probably cost £80/100 for the clutch and £100/150 for fitting. Could be gearbox gone or going which would probably cost ya £500+. Could be gear linkage which is about £10 to £70 depening if its just 1 part needed or whole lot...ect. Or it could be because your so short your not putting the clutch all the way down lol.

Goto a trusted garage and find out for sure.

His experience of the AA/RAC is that they generally are useless and take hours to do anything and dont do anything - my bf used to do mechanics part time alongside his normal job.

Did it have any warranty? Most second hand cars only have three months and often the clutch isnt covered as its classed as wear and tear. If you call the RAC they can tell you what it is then you can see about contacting the dealer to query. :)

Your boyfriend is going to remove the gearbox and check the clutch?
Why are you in the RAC?

Its not the clutch as it works for the other gears.

He is not removing gearbox, he is doing something - taking off a cable and seeing if it sthe gearbox. I dont really understand

Could still be the clutch, its just that the reverse bit is worn more than the others, the other bits will start to follow,

In reality there are a few things it could be, and most involve stripping major bits of car to sort,
#19
Surely this is exactly the reason you joined the RAC, call them out that's what they're there for.

hope it isn't too bad.

I have no clue but maybe if your bf has that much time to help u check etc, why cant he take it in for u? least he may pretend to have more of a clue.. I agree mechanics can be a handful at times, i prefer the local ones rather than the big named ones tbh..

have u tried putting it into reverse when the ignitions off?

Also try looking on forums, pref ford focus forums, U'll have better luck asking that question there..

Edit: If it is the clutch u should really get it done asap, i've heard many bad stories with tranny/clutch issues.... i.e. if clutch is gone, it might kill the flywheel too etc etc etc..
#21
Still can be the clutch if it goes into other gears ok. try adjusting the gear linkage too. And put it in reverse with ignition off. Clutch down start the car see what happens
#22
Seems a bit of a strange thread. You have been having trouble with it for weeks, yet you have only owned for a few weeks, don't trust garages and don't have any faith in the AA or RAC. To be honest, sounds like it was a problem that could have been foreseen with a trip to the trader or somebody earlier.

I'd guess it is most likely the clutch either worn, or something to do with the pressure plate or linkage so it is not clearing. Either way it will be the clutch being replaced as it wouldn't be worth trying to change a part of it. be amazed if it is the linkage and a little suprised if it is the gearbox unless very high mileage or abused somehow. Leaks generally need fixing and are a warning of something worse to come.

wont go in reverse with ignition on or off
#25
You mentioned it once had a fluid leak? Could possibly be thrust bearing, Although could be numerous other things to be honest, Including Clutch, Sycromesh, Gearbox etc,
#26
send the bf packing in the dodgy car.... job done !
#27
Would you ask for advice about getting a hot deal on a car fan's forum?:?
Seriously though, do you ever get your cars serviced? If so then try to build up a rapport with a particular garage, you soon get to know if they are trustworthy, and if they're any good then they'll remember you and treat you well if you always use them. They're not all bad.
#28
Sounds like it could be the synchromesh for reverse gear could be nackered. Need to get it to a garage really
#29
Am getting a new gearbox, as per usual the catty comments. Thanks for those that were useful

Yeah it could be. Which would be cheaper to get a used gearbox than get it repaired!

Just try find a TRUSTED garage, i know theres alot of dodgey ones out there. Try find 1 that dont charge to find the problem. Alot out there that do that free. Dont pay anyone to get them to look at it. Let them find the problem for free than hear out there quote. Make sure if they change the gearbox that you have the old gearbox, or if they change the clutch make sure they keep the old 1...ect. My relative got ripped off £1000 on a gearbox thrust bearing!! when it should of cost a fraction of that. The guy kept it for a week and said hed done this and that but the proof showed he didnt. Let your BF go to the garage with the car and make sure hes clear that if they do any work on it then you want the old parts.

Thanks J4GG4 - am getting a reconditioned gearbox and getting bf to fit it.

So you think that the Misc have more chance of fixing your car than the RAC or a garage?

Wow, serious judgement.

Yes there might be mechanics on here but there are defintalty mechanics at the RAC or a garage. How can someone fix a problem like that on the internet?

I know very little about how to fix a gearbox issue which I'm sure is the case for the vast the majority of the misc, hence why I'm asking you why didn't you just take your car to a garage rather than ask for help on a deals forum.

I'm 17 and my Aston Martin Vantage reverses without any problems. :)
