Graphics: 256MB Nvidia 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

I need a game to run this spec.

Looking at amazon for a good graphics card to cover all bases.

Any one out there with knowledge on which one I should go for?

What are the specs of the system you want to put the new graphics card into and which game is it?

just buy an Nvidia GTS 250 (or GTX) cant remember off the top of my head.. cost me £80 from Novatech and will EASILLY play that kinda game

I have aECS Geforce 7050m mobo running 2gb of DDR memory, only the onboard video is only 256 mb shared.

There is a pci express 16 slot id be looking to fill with this card.

The game is grand theft auto iv.

GTA 4? Better hope you have a fantastic CPU.

EASILLY run GTA IV.

GTA IV just runs at a crappy FPS, probably because it wasn't optimized for PC as much as it could have been...

but yeah.. get the Nvidia 250, you wont be disappointed. Make sure you got a 300+ PSU

EDIT: 2gb of RAM is kinda slow for gaming. You need at least 3gb i'd say. 4gb would be nice though..

Yeah , I saw that @81 quid a bit over my budget. Just looking for something to run the recommended spec of 512mb nvidia 8600.

Now does that mean and nvidia OVER 8600? I am really a noob when it comes to this.

what is your budget for a graphics card? (GPU) And i'll say what you should buy

And yeah the 250 is in the newer range, it's newer and more powerful than the 8600.

£60 delivered, although I am a member of Amazon prime so if you see one up to £60 excluding delivery then id prefer that.

this is probably the best one i can find right now. it's DDR3 and it's PCI-E so it'll work fine on your mobo :-)

where does that match up to the nvidia 8600 spec?

it's pretty similar, you're getting 1gb of DDR3 memory rather than DDR2. DDR3 is faster and a 1gb capacity may help you with games like GTA IV, so overall, it's probably the best card you're gonna find anywhere for the money.

If you want ill look again tomorrow for you before you go ahead n buy it. hope this helps some

And it's rubbish.

find me a much better card for £60...

A little better, but it's poor. You'd be much better getting a GTS 250 (double the performance of a 8800GT, triple the performance of a GTS220 based on Far Cry 2) or a 8800GT/9800GT (about £45 used)

1GB or not, that doesn't mean much when the card is crap.

If you check my posts i recommended a 250 but its over budget, we're looking for a card within £60.

If we're looking up used GPU's, then it opens up hundreds of potential cards... depends if the OP wants a new or used GPU. Personally, i'd always go for new.

For your budget & what you want i would forget looking a Nvidia cards & look at ATI cards. An for your price range either go for a 4650 or 4670

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-HD4670-512MB-Ultimate-Graphics/dp/B001PA6WEM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262682918&sr=1-1

An if you check this link you will see that they perform better than the nvidia 8600

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2464-8.html

Just find the 8600 on the list & you will see the 4650 & the 4670 are a few levels up over the 8600

Am tempted to go over budget for the gts 250 now, hmmm. Talk me out of it someone, lol.

Won't talk you out of it but confuse you more lol

how much are you willing to pay to get a 250? Cos if you willing to spend around £90 you could get a ati 5750, that card supports direct x 11 which a lot of the newer games that are coming will need but the 250 don't support it

so as they say the choice is yours

Actually that one is only DDR3, you'd be better off with the GDDR3 version for a similar price.

You want people on a deals site who's primary interest is value for money to persuade you to go for a £55 card with half the performance of an £80 card?

Cheapest I can see for the gts 250 is 91 quid, but Friday delivery, at least on amazon I can get one the next day as I'm an amazon prime member.

Does anyone see anything up to the 80 quid mark that's for Wednesday amazon prime delivery?

Well will start with that processor doesn't exist. If it is indeed tri-core and 2.8ghz then it must be an Phenom II X3.

As for graphics cards if you have no pci-e power cable or molex connectors as is quite normal on most pre-built machines then a 4670 or a GT240 DDR5 is about the best you can do. You may find a 8800GT green edition knocking about on ebay.
#22
Phenom sounds right. I have a pci e slot, but what's the pci e power cable?

It may just be the 6 pins or 6+2 pins like the pic.

Or you need a spare power connector like this below.

I have one but it connects to the mobo. Perhaps onboard graphics?

A 6pin or a flat (molex)? You shouldn't have either on a AM2+ mobo.

I would expect a 20pin block with a 4pin block next to it and/or a 4pin block near the CPU. Can't think of any boards that have a 6 pin block. Some old boards have a 4pin (molex) for cpu power.

Just list you PSU and we'll go at from that route.
#27
Just opened the PC up.

q-tec 400w psu, 20 pin molex to mobo ----- PWR1 Standard 24-Pin ATX Power connector

4 pin to mobo (plugs in near CPU)------------ PWR2 4-pin +12V power connector

PCIEX16 port for Graphics slot.

motherboard is a GeForce 7050m

edit just checked the processor in system settings and get

AMD ATHLON (TM) 64 X2 DUAL CORE PROCESSOR 5000+

So you dont any of the spare power connectors then, didn't expect so. So it's to post 25.

All the cards will run a reasonable frame rate at 1280x800.

So it 2.6ghz and dual core! lol

does that mean I cant use PCI express unless I get another PSU?

How about this one?

I'd just get this. Add a mousemat or something to bring it up to £50 for free delivery. It's got three different display outputs which is useful.

All the cards mention so fair are PCI-e cards it just that any card spec'd over the mention ones in post 25 need to get additional power from a good PSU.

If you want with Nvidia you prob couldn't get any better than a GT240 but im not 100% sure on that but if you went with ATI you could get a 4670, Its up to you which make you prefer, both do good cards but ATI work out a little cheaper

Thanks all for the information and help, rep to all.

This has been very educational.

Can probably only use two at a time though.

Probably.. although was more thinking about the ability to choose your output rather than resort to possible use of an adapter.

My old card had VGA, DVI and HDMI, I never bothered with HDMI though, just use DVI > HDMI.

VGA is handy on my HD4770 because I cba to buy a DVI>VGA cable :p
