Hi All

Bought a new laptop today, however, I got comet to power it on for me first to check dead pixels. It was fine.

They then turned the laptop off, while windows was installing. Took it home, when I switch it on, it says error, computer turned off etc, press OK to restart and install windows. I did, it restarts, but this message comes up. How do I get my windows on?

I cant use laptop! Please help! Its a Sony FZ21E

Please! Thank you.

What message comes up?

Does it just keep saying to press OK to restart windows, when restarted?

If you can you're probably best just restoring the recovery partition as that won't take long and should sort the problem. I'm not sure what the process for vaios is outside of Windows without boot media though.

How do I do that? Its so new, the original vista didnt install, they just held the power button to switch it off after I was happy there were no pixel probs.

I dont even know what the vista start button looks like, thats how new it is.

So panicing

is it a sony vaio>?

It says.

The computer restarted unexpectedly, or there was an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. Press OK to restart, and then restart installation. - Along them lines.

Does it not come with any Cds?There should be a Cd to restore the laptop to the factory settings. You can then reinstall Windows again.

Nope, Vaios don't come with CDs you have to make them yourself which is a bit of a joke considering the pennies it would cost to include the CDs.

Check the manual, there hopefully is a way to invoke the recovery by pressing one of the function keys when you power the machine on - I'm not at home right now so I can't check the documentation for my own Vaios.

The shop were not very helpful. Id been pushing them as last week, the laptop was £718, couple of days later it went up to £749.99, and today it went up again £799.99.

I was not happy, they said I was lying. Settled for £775. So I'm not in good terms anyway.

:? Pay all that money for a Vaio and Sony can't be bothered to throw in a few CDs?Crazy!

I know, I think it's pathetic. It's even worse on their UX, this machine comes with a 32GB SSD with 6GB taken up by a recovery partition and there's no onboard or supplied optical drive making it more tricky to produce the recovery CDs as well.

I can understand it a little more with a cheaper machine like an Acer (although even then, CDs are not expensive) but on a machine with a 2k rrp and no easy way to produce the recovery media there's no excuse.

They give you recovery instead of cd for many reasons the first of is that the payment to microsoft is less. A pre install with recovery costs less than branded oem(eg dell windows disk), oem or retail. The second reason is that they keep all there branding on the machine. The third is that with a few presses of a button most people can do a recovery. Most people cant do a full re-install.
Well anyway you bought a £775 sony laptop so I have no sympathy!

The Vaio recovery CDs are not Windows CDs, they are images which are restored back to the PC - they basically contain the same data as within the recovery partition. When you use them, you are not doing a re-install you are simply restoring the images back to the PC with the same procedure as restoring the install using the recovery partition.
