Laptop: Acer Aspire 4315
Well basically today i download Microsoft outlook express and it seem to keep messing up, like it kept trying to install, when it had already been installed. Then a bit later i tried to go on Control panel, but it didn't work and neither did hardly anything else! I just held down the power button and turned it back of. Then the start up repairs thing kept running and restarting now i just get the 'Windows error recovery screen" (black background white text)
with all the safe modes, and all the ones i click it just goes to a plain black background with the white mouse pointer and nothing else!

I really don't know what i did....a virus maybe??
Please, please, please help :(

I think your first problem is that you don't download Outlook Express.. it's either on the machine with Windows, or it's bundled with Internet Explorer - so you download that. If you think you downloaded Outlook Express I would guess that you have actually downloaded a virus. The long and short of it is the best thing to do would be re-install your machine. That wipes the slate clean.. including all of your data.. There are other ways to get around it, but they will be complicated and time consuming...

You can try Windows Repair Install if you have the original windows CD/DVD

-Make you Acer to boot from CD/DVD
-Insert Windows CD

follow these steps: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

repair install wont erase your data

try ringing acer helpline on 0870 853 1000 they should be able to help you and give you some advice.

If they don't supply disks with the machine it usually means there is a recovery partition on the Hard Drive - this will have Windows + drivers, and your license is probably on a sticker stuck to the machine. Take a look at the Acer website in the support section to see how they recommend re-installing the machine. Sorry I can't help more.. off out now!

youre right most computer wont come with CD nowadays..
the repair console is usually embedded in the HD recovery partition

i think you access it by pressing F8, F10 or alt + F10

I have found the restore option if i press f8, but how can i save all my music 1st? or can't i?

you might just have to bite the bullet and restore back a couple of days

you might just have to bite the bullet and restore back a couple of days

when i try restoring it says.. no restore points have been created on your computer system disk.

I rang acer tech' help
They told me on the 1st screen i see as soon as i power up the laptop to press Alt & f10 together continuously untill you get the ' Acer recovery manager'

From there you can restore the laptop to factory settings!- however you need a password, luckily i remembered mine!

Now it just going to take me ages to get my laptop back to the way i like it! (musics and programs ect!!!!!)

Thanks for the help
