lock up hamster securely in cage, buy mousetraps, bait with peanut butter

try the plug ins they have that discourage them from the house

Looked into these. They have never been proven to work, my local pet shop used to stock them but they stopped after testing on beside a mouse cage and the mouse didn't mind it at all.

Dont worry about it OP we live beside a field and get mice every year. If you use a humane trap you have to take them at least a mile or two away or they will find their way home.

Some local authorities offer a free service to eradicate rats and mice in your house. Give them a call. Either that or go to B&Q or a local hardware store and bait them yourself.

They can fit through ridiculously small holes, get a couple of traps and set them for your own peace of mind. Remember they will always do their best to avoid you so nothing to be worried about

Chances are you won't see them, the give away though is droppings around the skirting board, get if you have a uv strip,bulb/torch of any kind this will show up their urine trails.

Thanks everyone....partner thinks if there are mice then they will be coming in through kitchen because thats only place there are holes. He taping the holes up with paper to see if they come though? Bodge job me thinks!

Local council offer a pest control service (free for mice) so will call them tomorrow....hopefully they can look at droppings and say yes or no

Just buy a trap and bait it you will find out very quickly if there are any mice, had some in my house set a trap down killed a few of them and never been back since

Do you live on a terraced street near any takeaways by any chance? When I was a student we lived right off a high street with 100s of takeaways. The mice used to feed off their rubbish and run all the way along the road through people's houses. So even if your house was spotless they still would run through the living and in to the neighbours house and so on! The council said that a mouse can fit through a hole the width of a pencil!

So my advice is clear up the droppings and make sure there is no crumbs or food lying about. If the droppings come back then go and buy like 50 mouses traps and a kilo of Peanut butter (they like the crunchy stuff better) and hide them behind the white goods. Then be prepared to see a mouse with a severed neck in the morning.

Other pets can sometimes be part of the cause. Leaving food out for your pet will be attractive to the mice. Even if you have a cat, not all cats will bother to chase mice and/or kill them. Some will just gorge themselves on the food you provide and watch the mice for entertainment. Time to put all food in the fridge/freezer or tins/jars and make sure you empty the toaster of crumbs regularly as any minute food scrap will encourge them to stay close. They may be picking up some scraps from around the hamster cage as well.

The worst thing about mice is when they nibble your toes in the night.

we found choc;olate works better in the traps that penut butter (or strawberies!!) got 2 cats but one of 'em is the problem. He keeps bringing in live mice and letting 'em go :x
