hi my iphone is stuck in recovery mode, i updated to latest firmware and it seems to have crashed, when connected to itunes it prompts a msg saying - simcard not installed please install a sim card and retry. but there is a sim in the phone, i have tried various network sim cards and yet same error msg occurs. what can i do to fix it? it doesnt seem to recognise my phone on itunes either.

Hold power + home button at the same time until it turns off, keep holding until the apple logo re-appears. try that < hard reset, should work.

Thats not gonna help if its stuck in recovery mode.

Can't you just stick it into DFU mode and try another restore?

Plug phone in via USB, hold power + home for 10 seconds (or about a second after screen goes blank), release power, hold home until windows detects a new device.

try restore.

Thankyou, ive tried various ways of restoring the phone. but wont seem to work, its only showing the usb itunes page and emergency, nothing else seems to work. is it maybe a hardware fault?

i would doubt it.

Are you SURE you've tried DFU? DFU mode should show NOTHING on the iphone screen, but itunes will detect it.

You must follow the instructions given to the letter though. - if you see a itunes logo, you're NOT in DFU.

is DFU when the screen turns white?

No - when its just black.

Phone is on right, you connect usb. then you hold home and power for 10 seconds, then release power. if you do it right, you will not see any logo. keep holding home until your pc detects it - which is usually as new hardware if you havent been in DFU before.

Recovery mode (just before white screen) is the same as DFU mode btw.

Is you friend familiar with the iPhone, can you be sure the sim is inserted correctly etc?

How old is the phone? You could always book a genius appointment?

yes my friend knows the ins and outs of iphones, he fixes them for all my mates, however unfortunetly for me my warranty has just run out today. so that was a huge dissapointment. sim is definately inserted correctly, just dont understand as to why it wont read it

Depending on hardware and firmware, you could try using redsn0w or alternative to 'hacktivate' your iphone, which might perhaps rule out (or in) a hardware fault with the sim slot.
