US to UK voltage

Anyone know what would happen if I plugged a hairdryer rated at 120v 1650w into a US to UK voltage adaptor rated at 100w (highest we could get)???

Or, how to get the hairdryer to work here as unlike a lot of appliances it doesn't say 120v/250v..just 120v.

you would need a step down voltage convertor, you can get these @ most electrical stores or argos, maplins etc. if u plug it in right now it would be bye bye hair dryer and may trip your switches in the house as well

isn't that what I already have? converts 240v to 110v but it's only rated 100w

Don't do it...

You'll just waste the life of the transformer which could allow full voltage to the hairdryer and that would also be toast...

Ratings are there for a reason, don't overlook them or you'll end up out of pocket.

For the sake of a power rating that high, just buy another hairdryer (would be less than an industrial unit for converting the voltage for that power rating).

You need a transformer (not the toy) to step up the voltage. As stated, it would be cheaper to buy a new hairdryer. A Transformer is different to an adapter.

As previously quoted the current that a 1600W hairdryer would pull will kill any cheapo voltage convertor.

Just go to any supermarket / argos and get a cheap hairdryer

just stick your finger in the socket instead, it'll dry your hair a lot quicker - admittidly you might not achieve the same hairstyle you were after

you clearly don't know my girlfriend! Just try and tell her that hairdryer will work the same as her fancy pants one!

well let her use it then, either the adapter or hairdryer will melt thereby removing any further need! ;)

turns out I don't know my girlfriend either (what a surprise) she was surprisingly open to the argos dryer.
