Ok so after reinstalling windows on my pc it no longer recognises my usb hard drive.
Nothing happens when I plug it in sometimes and others it says usb device not recognised.

I have tried it in my laptop as well with the same result.

When I tried it on a Linux based pc it recognises the drive as freecom hdd but it comes up as "unable to mount volume"

I'm not really bothered if the drive works again afterwards if I can get all my music and photos back which I backed up to it before formatting my pc.

Any ideas please?

Have you installed your Motherboard disk?
You might need to do this for your PC to recognise your USB ports....
Does your USB ports recognise anything else you plub into the uSB slot?
#2
Are they front or rear usb ports?

Although its quite expensive to recover data from a "broken" hard drive it is possible to get some of it back yourself if you have the right software....

Send me a message and let me know how you get on :)

I agree .. try the ones at the back ... they should work ... but to get any others working ..install the Motherboard disk ...

Again I am NO Expert.... :)

Dont forget to let us know how you get on....

I've tried both the front and rear ports on the pc, other usb devices work ok.

I am thinking the drive must be shot as it is not recognised by the laptop either.

I just need to get the photos back really.

It's a 400gb freecom btw.

Most of the 2.5" USB drives on the market have standard 2.5" PATA or SATA hard disks inside.

When my USB drive went wrong I managed to remove the hard disk from it's casing and plug it into my pc using a 2.5" IDE ribbon cable to retrieve the data.

can you safely remove hardware from windows before you mount drive in linux?i think linux has problems unless you do. hope that helps and good luck.

it sounds like you need to install the drivers for usb support. if you don't have the discs, you could try going into device manager and looking for the yellow exclamations? but that only works if your pc has recognized them (and asked for drivers that you didnt put in)

I Can't. Windows won't recognise the drive anymore at all so I cannot safely remove it.

Yes I did think I might do that. Looks like the only thing to try.

I don't think it's a driver issue though because it used to work ok with my laptop and now it won't.

You shouldn't need to install usb drivers in any windows from 98 onwards...
Get the hard drive out of the case and put it in the comp directly the case adds more complications... could be trying to draw too much power, might be a faulty lead, mighth be a usb hub problem (internal) get the drive in the comp and see what it does eliminates so many possible issues, Then tell us if its detected in the bios first! then you can start doing something with it.

do you have a card reader or anything in the computer which could be using the drive lettering?

Can you go into disk management and see if it seen by windows?
#14

#15
is it not being recognized at all?
its not saying found new hardware followed by some weird name you don't recognize?
i had a problem like that with my WD and its a simple fix if you know how....

Spent hours trawling through last night:oops:

hmmmm i've not come accross it.
google the error code maybe?
or google "freecom portable malfunctioned"
if its there but not recognised it may be a problem with the actual hard drive so taking it out might not solve anything.

my sony mp3 used to give that error when the cable got a bit dodgy....
I have known that error when the supply on usb is too much (remember usb can only give 500ma of power)

Lets start from the beginning:

You recently re-installed your PC ?
What operating system were you running before the install?
What operating system are you running now?

Also .. the USB device.... :
If you wanted to ... is it possible to FORMAT it....?
Have you tried plugging into EVERY USB slot in your PC....

Sorry if some of these questions seem stupid.... I am just after clarification....

I appreciate you taking the time to try and help, thanks.

I will take the drive out and connect it to the pc, when I buy the silly shaped screwdriver bit required [/COLOR]

Is this a FAT32 vs NTFS issue?
I am struggling to be honest as I know nothing about Linux....

How much is the USB drive worth?
You should be able to recover the data using specialist software....maybe not 100% but then recovering some of it is better than NONE :)

It's not so bad. I uploaded my photos to snapfish a while ago so it's just the music and afew films, which I can always replace if I can't get the data off the drive. Lesson learnt, back up everything online as well as the backup drive.

might be a silly question but have you tried taking the harddrive out of its caddy and plugging it into the PCs Motherboard?

this happened to my freecom external drive, just took it out the caddy and installed it into another one!
