USB hubs – What do I need to know when buying one?
I have 3 ports on my HTPC and want to connect 5 or 6 devices so a 4 port hub should do the job. As I’ve never bought one before I don’t know what the potential pitfalls are so would be grateful for some pointers.
My HTPC has 1 USB 2.0 port and 2 USB 3.0 ports.
The devices that will be permanently connected are:
1. Dual tuner Freeview stick
2. Single tuner Freeview HD stick
3. Single tuner Satellite SD box
4. Keyboard/Mouse IR receiver dongle
5. RF receiver for a Remote Control
Devices 4 and 5 are low bandwidth and low power so should work with any hub I suspect.
Device 2 probably has the largest bandwidth and power requirement so will not connect to the hub.
I’m not sure which out of devices 1 or 3 has the highest bandwidth requirement although device 3 is externally powered and only used to record radio so it is a good candidate to use with the hub.
Any suggestions on what type of Hub I should be looking for? Bus powered or self powered etc.
