Not sure if i've posted this correctly.

I want to spend about 8-9k... which would you suggest?

Well depends on many things. Like running costs, insurance, how fast you want to go. How many people you normally carry.

My choice as an everyday car would be the golf as its a great all rounder.

The audi is looking a little tired IMO.

Not normally a fan of BMW's but drove a friends 116d and it was much better than I expected. Did Nottm to london and back on £20 and road tax is only £35 but you still get a proper grown up car. Space is a little tight in the back though if you regularly have to take adults out in it.

good luck finding one at that price thats any good! I would say the volkswagen purely for practicalities, then the A3 then the BMW. is it the base models or are you wanting a sportier one? how are we meant to know

BMW 1 are sluggish and did not get a good write up.. plus they are butt ugly at the front end.

Go VW then A3 if you must...

how about a civic type r?

I would suggest test driving all of the models you are interested in, 9k should get you a lot of car.
Reviews are all very well, but you can only really decide by your own experience, also dont go for the crappy 20 minute test drives, get your best blagging hat on and request weekend test drives.

Then try A, B roads, motorways etc, go to the supermarket, one of my requirements is: do I feel fresh after a 5 hour drive or am I crawling out of the door and doubled up in agony.

You can pick up mk5 for less than that.

I absolutely adore the Honda Type R

Don't get the BMW, it's an estate agents car and holds no rep status :p

I prefer the A3 over the Golf, the Golf is just a bit 'standard' these days bt the Golf is maybe more practical in the long run?

This might be a long shot but what about a ford focus? I just picked up a 57 plate ford focus TDCi with all the gear for £8000.
It is a very solid car which is very economical and has come a long way since the original focus.
Get the 1.8 model for a good bit of poke. Loads of space in the back, huge boot and confortable to drive. Try and get one with an arm rest to make it more confortable though.

I absolutely love my new focus.

What I found with the golfs for that kind of money is that if you want a decent interior then you have to go for a model with high mileage, if you are not bothered about the mileage then you will find one with a decent interior. What I think about the golfs is that unless you have a high spec model they look quite cheap inside. I looked at all the cars you mention and ended up going for the focus.

Just a thought!

Could get a very nice 350Z or S2000 for that amount of money.

had a golf now got the a3, which i much prefer because the style is a bit better than the golf also the handling and relibilty just a touch better, audi just seems a class up from vw even though they are the same company, not had a bmw so can't say owt about that..
