Used car......is this a good price?

Hopefully there are some petrol heads around who could possibly give some advice:)

I am looking at buying a Ford Mondeo 'R' regd 1.8LX(Zetec) for £925.It has very low mileage for it's years(47K) looks clean and seems to drive sweet as.The only concern is that on the bonnet and boot there are some patches on the paintwork,it seems to have lost it's lustre/bird poo scorching or been over rubbed with T-cut sorta thing!

Does anyone think this is a good price?

Any comments yay or nay would be appreciated to help me make up my mind:)

For a Mondeo of that age you're looking at around £500-£900 depending on condition and service history. Luckily there's not too much that goes wrong on that generation Mondeo besides the normal mechanical issues of a high mileage car (clutch, discs, pads, etc), so with a low mileage car you should be onto a winner.

It's all about if you like the car or not... They certainly go for cheaper, but they're often led very hard lives.

To be honest I would get the RAC to inspect the vehicle, I'm not sure how much it will cost but a phone call would clear that up. They may be able to give you an idea of the true value and it could also be a good negotiating point. Could save you a lot of grief later on:-

The AA charge just over a £100, ouch:-

Do you know any 'friendly' mechanics?

I'm not sure low milage on a car of that age has any benefits...in fact it is much worse if it has had a lifetime of short local runs... a vehicle with a high milage that has been used frequently for long motorway journeys has suffered far less wear and tear .

get a valuation here..but you'll need the reg mark

We used to have a mondeo and not bad for ranting the pants off it, but I doubt you will be doing any emergency calls..but

mileage.. have a close look at the speedo to see if the milegae numbers match up and not out of line.. a good way to check if its been clocked
Is there a service book check for all the major services another good way to check on mileage plus you could always give the garage a bell to check.
Check the VIn plate and chassis numbers agains the V5 also if the vin plate is missing dont bother and check the number stamped on the engine block to see if its the original , also have a look at the windows to see if they have ever been etched, sometimes the crims grind out the original index and polish the glass or replace the windows and they have a different index.
Oh has the CAM belt been replaced ? my old E reg escort`s went and cost me a few hundred quid and I think it should be replaced aT 60,000 and its an expensive job

Just a few thinks to think about as sometimes cheap might not be as cheap as you think

Thanks guys for the replies:thumbsup:

Phew...there is a lot to think about!

I think he is not for dropping the price any further, unfortunately,it is up at £1000 and £925 is the lowest he will go.From what I can gather this is at the top end for the year and maybe that is to be expected because of the low mileage. The clock didn't look out of alignment and I think this is genuine, also the engine sounded lovely and looked very clean.
I know what you are saying, currychops, about higher mileage.......high mileage does not bother me,I do a fair amount of miles and because of that have my car serviced regularly to keep it in good order.

I'm not sure I want to spend £100 to get it checked, maybe if the car was a lot newer and worth more this would seem a good investment, think I will have to chat the mechanic up that services me regularly and see if he will take a look.

The cam belt is something that crossed my mind over the weekend, every 60K or 6years whichever comes around sooner as I understand,so will deffo ask him re this.

Don't you mean services your car?
Or perhaps chatting him up will be very easy for you?

Mondeos are quite good cars, they go on and on and on and on - if they are looked after. As for a high mileage being better, I can't agree!

It does seem its at its money, but there is ALWAYS room for improvement on the price - no matter what they say.

Freudian slip.......most unlike me!:whistling:

As for chatting up,I am very charming,so should be no problem;-)

Thanks for the links Who's Watching and Cyrus....going by those this car does indeed seem to be a bit overpriced, serious thought now needed.

put it this way

you need to draw a line

if you pay 900 quid for a car - dont spend more than 200 on repairs - no matter what goes wrong

i paid 800 quid for my punto (aka punto bangton) = and i wish i didnt spend cash repairing it - i have spent about 2k overall it i think

240 on brakes
400 on 2nd mot
plus little bits here and there

just be prepared to bin it if it goes wrong

Ive had two Fords one for over 4 years which I really drive hard, and the family mondeo which weve had for 2-3 months. Both have been brilliant and have never ever let me down once. If you maintain them properly they will rarely go wrong
#19
In 6 years of having a driving license I've had.

A nissan Micra K reg
Seat Ibiza L reg
Vauxhall Corsa N reg
Peugeot 306 S reg
Fiesta 51 plate

Now driving a Focus.

The Fords have been the most reliable of the lot. Only had to replace tyres and brake pads when they became worn.

Taxi drivers use Mondeos so they must be quite reliable...

I think Ford parts are generally cheap and easily sourced.

If he won't lower the price, Get him to chuck in a full tank of fuel etc, Just little things that doesn't sound alot but actually saves you a couple of quid!

Check old MOT's to back up mileage, Check service history and an overall check for wear and tear, Like smooth steering wheel, Worn drivers seat etc.

As for condition, If there are a few patches where the paint is pealing etc then use this as a bargaining tool, Say that you'd like it mint condition and you'd need to spend £200 quid or whatever.

Yes my last two cars have been Hondas and I cannot fault them.
#25
we had a m reg mondeo a few years back and it was the most reliable car we had ever had and we have had alot .when we got it it had 103,000 miles .I can honestly say it was the best runner we have ever had and yet it was the cheapest .the price i think is high though even though it has low mileage i wouldn't pay more than 750 at the most .

Thanks to all for your comments:thumbsup:

On reflection I think he is asking too much,so will be looking around for something else, probably still a mondeo/vectra for reasons of general reliability and cost of servicing etc.

Maybe if in a couple of weeks we have not found anything,I may look and see if it is still for sale(he lives about 5 mins from me) and make a final offer.

Back hunting in the small ads for me:)
