you download the client software,in the settings you put your server details(this is all quite straightforward),then when you search for a file on the usual sources and click "get nzb",it downloads to your hardrive, you then extract the rars to create the file and burn it to a disc or a memory stick or just watch on the PC. you need to download a free program called "quickpar" to repair broken files(hardly ever needed tbh),and also have winrar installed.

Do you use them Barky? Would you recommend it?

Are there any 'free' alternatives?

I use them yes,and I would highly reccommend-obviously the "free alternatives" are torrents, but newsgroups are LIGHTNING fast, ssl secure, you ARENT file sharing like torrents-you dont upload to other people-hypothetically speaking, because obviously downloading films/tv shows is naughty, you can get a full tv episode in 3 minutes and a movie in 6.

i use them now over torrents rapidshare etc, i get full spped most of the time except at peak times when my isp throttles my speed. Use altbinz as free newsgroup downloader great program, auto unrars etc .

I use http://usenet-news.net
The block accounts are excellent for general Usenet access, or there's unlimited quarterly / yearly accounts for those who download a lot.

Ultra-fast !

For a block account (which is what I use), they can't be beaten. The allowance stays in "indefinitely", or until used.
Can't really comment about the quarterly / yearly accounts as haven't had an account like that since leaving Giganews many a year ago.

they are cheaper
10gb £1.24
25gb £3.10

ok, you have to use it within a year but if you aren't using it within a year you may as well just use torrents
