Usenet... just cos

Giganews has something like 210 day retention now, not sure what it really is but I hear good things about them :)
#3
yeah i heard that too....i've been with usenet for the last 15 months now and they just cancelled my subscription due to me not being to update my debit card for some reason they they have not been able to take payment because i have a new card and now i don't know if i want to re-sign up with them or maybe try giganews ???
#4
Giganews is the same, they don't accept maestro anymore.

They're a bit expensive imo, i used Giganews for 18 months for £15.99 a month for their encrypted unlimited subscription. Just moved to newsgroupdirect for nearly the same service and only £8.40 a month

They don't take debit cards either though

can someone explain what usenet is?

oh nice, i'm gonna try to join that one on the deals... i take it they do 720p media?
#8
Try Newshosting in the US, I pay £7ish for an unlimited downloads and 80 day retention.
#9
you really should change from NH UNLIMITED (MONTHLY) to NHXL UNLIMITED (MONTHLY) as the one your on does not use SSL encryption

For a free trial (3days) with no payment details I recommend http://member.hitnews.eu you need a valid email though as they email your account details. /signup.php?lang=en they take paypal too 1 month is 7.5 euro's - £5.98ish. Its payg so no need to worry about membership auto renewing either ive been using them for about 8 months now with no problems.

Usenetserver for me, giganews is almost three times more expensive.

Yup. Me too.

Used them for absolutely years - in the days where 2 days retention was the norm! Their current retention of 100 days may be less that Giganews, but if three months aint enough, perhaps usenet isnt the best method for people!

Maxing out my 16.5Mb connection is quite cool as well!

are you on the highspeed plus ? $17.95 or the $14.95 plan ? Is it just the extra 10 connections for the $3 price difference ??

Mine is actually $14.45 (as I used a 50c coupon when I first joined), but it equates to the $14.95 one.

Personally I dont see the benefit of the extra 10 connections. Ten is enough for me!

just signed up at hitnews, can anyone tell me where to go to download something? (just to see how fast it goes)

you need a news reader.....something like grabit or newsbin

I used to like grabbit and Newsleecher. Now I just use altbinz. Works well with the usenetserver search functions.

S-hitnews is terrible. Grabbing headers never bloody works.

My favourite is newsdemon :)

http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/ check there. They got special offers and suchlike.

I know nothing about usenet etc but surely an important deciding factor is the amount of content on the servers? Its all very well being cheap but if they dont have much to DL then its not worth it.

Excuse my ignorance if I am being dumb.

I'd recommend you to use altbinz and their own search facility. Use the "verson 2" one (as it groups everything together!)

If you havent worked it out yet, you will also need unrar and smartpar (or similar variations to unzip the files and also to recreate files that are damaged or missing.)

There are also a few online seach tools to grab your .nbz files, which you simply open in altbinz and off you go.

Have fun!

Thats the thing with usenet, all these companies will have the same stuff on them. Posts are sent to a users company, but everything is shared. The concept is "usenet" and all posts are universal to all providers. The only exception is if the host doesnt hold a particular newsgroup.

The factors to decide on are: The speed of your connection to their service, if they hold the groups you want (most if not all, will), cost, SSL (if you want it), retention (which was a real factor in the past, but isn't now.)

Thanks but i know all of this altready......Been using the newsgroups for a few years now. Think i am going to stick with grabit as you just type in what you want to search for and i use newzbin.com to see what has hit the newsgroups

OK, no worries, though the info is useful for others who are less knowledgeable.

So have you paid for Grabbit? I know in the past, you had to pay for their search facilty?

It is worth using the usenetserver seach though as mentioned. Its pretty much all I use now. (I used to d/l all headers - which often brought up things you would otherwise miss. Cant be bothered now though. To be honest, I use it less and less now and have become very selective what I put in my "shopping cart":whistling:)

Thanks for the info.

Know of any decent site which explains it all in laymans terms?

I would imagine the link above will have a good review section to explain what and how you can do it. (BTW the Zeus reply was for something I'd replied to him - I didnt know he was an old hand!)

Thanks for the input Guv....I'm sure loads will find it useful. I have paid for the grabit search facility which was only a couple of dollars a year. I have had a look at the usenetserver but i think newzbin is better as it shows you what has been posted to the newsgroups and you don't have to search for anything.

That looks like a good site, I haven't seen that one before

The one I like is Slyck.com, it has a lot of good info

I agree, you cannot beat Newzbin, it is so much easier than anything else, at least for me anyway

Barneydog have you got a spare newzbin invite I could use? I've been looking for a decent site for ages but have had no luck. I've heard only good thinks about newzbin so if you have a spare invite I would be very grateful.

I recommend Giganews though I do realise that they are probably the most expensive provider out there.

I'm not sure why people consider paying just to search and download their nzb fix but each to their own. I find b-i-n-s-e-a-r-c-h-.-i-n-f-o to be more than adequate, especially since it's free.
#32
is this difficult to set up, i remember there was a free trial advertised on here before (hitnew.eu i think) but it didnt work straight away so i couldnt be bothered. im willing this time to put a bit more effort in.

ill be moving back to uni soon and have a 10meg virgin line, will they throttle me if i download a lot of files (linux distros of course)
#33
can some one help me out with this please? im looking to see if i can get a free trial working while im at home and then if i think its worth it get a subscription when im back at uni.
#34
Giganews is great if you wanna get older stuff.
I´m with hxxp://xxx.usenetserver.com/ at the moment. Only 7.50 GBP per month and very good service.
When I need older files i put usenetserver on hold and get giganews for a month...
If you´re only after files that aren´t older than 105 days I´d definitely say go with usenetserver.com
Files i get from newzbin. Best thing out there IMO. Grabit is the best program to download as it´s got a nice surface (not as confusing as others)
and does everything for you from repairing to unzipping.
