Bought a Tom Tom XL with full Europe maps last year.

Worked fine in the UK. Went to Spain last year and it wouldn't pick up a signal so we couldn't use it.

Got back to the UK and it workded fine.

Going to Spain again this year and want to take the Sat Nav again.

Do you have to contact anyone to say you are going abroad like a mobile or should it just work

Have you been updating it over the internet? There always seems to be GPS fixes and other updates.

Take it back to the shop.

Update it quite regularly and updated it before we went to Spain.

In the past I have had no issues over in ireland, france and italy with the Tom Tom One and it just worked, although as other posters have said I ensured I had the latest maps and updates installed beforehand.

Maybe it is best to talk to TomTom as it is probably a software fault. One of my friends did this recently and got it sorted.

My garmin has worked all over Spain and Portugal, you do need to reset the country on the Garmin but it was never an issue. Can you log a support call with TomTom? There must be a way of resetting it when abroad...

if you have the maps IE western Europe then it should work - my old 720 is crap at picking up the sats so I bought an aerial for it (about £6 ) and now it works a treat

If it works at home then it will work abroad. Not being funny, but do you have valid maps and selected them? Another reason why it won't work is that you haven't given enought time for the GPS to update its almanac and ephemeris data.
