I have heard that these sites have been taken over by the film companies. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines? Shame if they have!

Not as of yesterday anyway. Not likely that an application such as Utorrent would be taken over by a movie company though it is probable that torrent sites can be forced to shut down.

I have been told they are collecting all the I P addresses of people using these sites!:x

I very much doubt that uTorrent would be taken over, they're not doing anything illegal, their software doesnt infringe any copywrites in itself and there is a ton of legal stuff on torrent networks.

mininova on the other hand is 'probably' one of the next targets for closure, its one of the major players in torrent distribution now that torrentspy is no more.

as for tracking IP's, it'd be a complicated process getting hold of those log files since they'll be held on the servers mininova is hosted on, which are in a country in which the American government has no jurisdiction and so cannot force the hosts to make the logs available without some complex legal stuff going on. Even if they DO get hold of the log files its more likely they'll go after the people releasing the files than those downloading, cutting things off at the source is always a more effective route than going for the individual downloaders. Even then they'll need to go via the ISP's controlling the uploaders internet connection and get them to disclose who the IP's were assigned to at the time of the uploads - ISP's in the UK pretty much flat out refused to do this a while ago and made a token gesture of sending out some warning letters.

I remmember somthing about utorrent being taken over by the movie company about a year or so ago i think it was version 1.7 so if your using an older version it should be ok.
It was from a warning on araditracker so they banned anyone using version 1.7

Just had a look at there website for the warning but it has been shut down :x

µTorrent was bought out by bittorrent like a year ago, who work with the movie companies, so from 1.7 onwards its not trusted. Alot of private sites only accept 1.6 and below now. Torrents are rubbish anyways.

Explain why torrents are rubbish.!
