Valentines Day - What to do?! Bit of a poll!

T8RSP Avatar

Well, the Christmas Decorations are just about down, so it looks like the next event is Valentines Day!

I just wondered what people were thinking of doing for their partners (if anything at all! ) or surprising someone!

Especially on the case of flowers - and this is where the poll comes into it!

I've seen some places do single roses and a gift of some sort, like Champagne, chocolates or a little teddy etc. Or they do a dozen roses for the same price or a bit more of the single rose and the gift.

Would it be deemed "cheap"/"tight" by anyone to go for the single rose with gift option? If so, why, and if not, why not?

Call me unromantic, but I don't buy into the whole Valentine's day charade,in fact i think it is the least romantic day of the year! Why,you may ask?

Romance should be spontaneous, surprise your loved one when they least expect it,and it doesn't have to be ridiculously overpriced(well this is HUKD after all!)...their fave choc bar secreted in a coat pocket,a note in their packed lunch box,you get the idea.

at this point you may think me a tightwad bloke, who begrudges getting his missus some flowers, far from it.........................Im a laydee;-)

Agree with every word, thankfully so does my girlfriend otherwise I'd be in trouble in 5 weeks time :)

My sister on the other hand just thinks I'm being a miserable, tight git

I don't have a partner (:() so not a decision I have to make...

I do agree that valentine's day is way overblown these days as with any significant events - I would rather give my hypothetical partner a token gesture and surprise her with something at a different point of the year.

:giggle: i also thought i dont have a lunch box, but i think she means for work/college :)

Also went for the full bunch - and all for the same person (!) - but a single rose is equally as good (it all depends on the presentation....)

But then my 'SO' gets flowers on other occasions throughout the year as well ... they cheer the house up so I get the benefit both ways!

You can't eat either.

Having said that, you probably can. Someone shall come and tell us all of how he survived on just one petal a day when he was left stranded in a cornwall cottage garden for months.

i agree, IF i had a partner, i would appreciate the little things all year round, not expensive stuff, the little things, like running a bubble bath spontaneously for no reason, breakfast in bed, taking you to watch a chick flick without you nagging and not complaining about it, noticing/complimenting on your hair/clothes, if more effort was made on the every day things, who needs vanentines day!!! After all, flowers die :-D save the money
#11
I can't vote, I don't agree with either option. It's just a money-making racket, same as Mother's Day, Father's Day (and any others they introduce).

If you need a certain day and social pressure to show someone you love them, you're not trying hard enough the other 364 days of the year. :p

Usually if I run someone a bath they get the wrong idea!

ha ha...see thats my point, do it for no reason!

I think the single rose option can be seen as more romantic in some ways, especially if you go and pick one out, lol. The thought that you've picked a special one out for a special person and all that...
#15
The fact that you are even thinking about it now and asking for advice makes you more thoughtful and romantic than most blokes out there, my OH probably won't even think about what to get me until a day or 2 beforehand.
#16
Have to agree with the other posts, Valentines day is so contrived and a huge money making spin for retailers, I would much rather have simple romantic gestures throughout the year than some exhausted interflora delivery driver at the door on the 14th!!
#17
Just consider it ... spontaneous? :P

Well I do actually do things like running a bath, but, instead I start a shower. You lot may call it leaving the tap on but to me its not :)

There's always one! lol

Lower the tone why don't you! :D

Thanks for all the advice and comments.

I should have added a "don't bother" option too as quite a few people have said it's over hyped. And you are right, the fact a rose costs x but a few weeks before the 14th of Feb, they cost 4 times x! It is almost criminal, but if enough people out of 10 are "willing" to pay it, they aren't going to stop!

Great ideas about the little everyday things too!

I quite agree, can't be doing with Valentines Day at all. I hate to be told that I should be romantic on that one day of the year! It is about being spontaneous and not doing it on one day just because it is Valentines Day. I think it is commercialised rubbish and the main winners are florists and card shops.
Oh and again not a bloke but a lovely lady!

My OH says the same, but that's only a valid excuse if they actually do romantic little things throughout the year and he bloody well doesn't lol

I unexpectedly received a lovely handmade Valentine's card off a member of my 'fanclub' last year. I reckon this might be one of those year's I receive none at all though :)

It's early panic "buying" - that's all!

I remember seeing something AGES ago (and I mean AGES ago - we are talking a good 5 years!) which was a single red rose in a bottle/tube. Think it was from Interflora. Can find similar-ish items, but they don't look half as good!

The search continues...:-(

I agree with Joshanna - in reality not many blokes/girls do things all year round - most of us are too busy.

I work away from home a lot and make a point of not going away around the 14th - as my boss understands that my hubby would rather I was at home - try this any other time on a random week and it doesn't work.

In my opinion 'doing little things all year round' is kidding yourself and a get out clause for not spending any money.

You can still make Valentines day special without spending a fortune.
#31
Valentines day also happens to be my wedding anniversary so i am able to combine 2 events in to 1 neat & tidy package. At least i wont forget the date of my anniversary :)

As for what we will be doing, probably drop the bin lids off at the inlaws and go out for a meal. A dozen red roses is a must though.

*looks at his empty wallet* Will a dozen "borrowed" same type of flowers from next doors garden taken at the dead of night suffice?! :-D

Having looked at other posts with flower offers, it is almost criminal how they can mark up the price of roses etc, which does make a mockery of Feb the 14th, and if you can do it during the year, it will probably save you in the long term!

Still thinking of what to do! It'll be our first Valentines day together etc so I'm just trying to do what's best etc etc!

I work in retail and witness "husbands" buying valentines cards (and this happens at Christmas also) entitled "to my wife" and at the same time buying a card entitled "to the one I love"!

Perhaps.........the "luckly" recipient is getting two cards??? :w00t:

Thankfully, they are the minority I have to add.
#34
So when do we see the hot deals for roses appearing on here?

Uh oh! I've been rumbled! :w00t:

I would hope they are buying the one "to my wife" as they "have" to, and the one "to the one I love" for the whole element of the "secret admirer" etc!

Can't really explain it for the Christmas cards though! :whistling:

I would imagine never! The cheapest I've seen a single red rose for is £9.99 and I don't think that included delivery!

However, I have seen 100 red roses for a "wallet-friendly" (yeah right!) £499.99! Might as well make it a round £500!

I think the only deal will be if you get an egg credit card, which you may get cashback through quidco for (but don't quote me on that) as well as signing up to Egg's Money Manager software thingymabob (but again, I'm not sure) but I believe if you go through 0800flowers, egg give you 50% cashback for that transaction!

There maybe a few £x off a £xx spend vouchers floating around or a few x% off codes, but whether they will be around, or even valid for valentines day remains to be seen!

Or, what you could do, is have valentines day on the 15th, where the flowers will be dirt cheap and where you will be able to go out for a meal, and get more for your money! :-D :p :giggle:

Id hope to recieve a dozen red roses, however I would only send a single rose to my boyfriend, the obvious reason being that hes a bloke and as such doesnt want to recieve expensive BEAUTIFUL flowers.

I think a single rose is just as romantic, but I want tons of them, my vase is empty!!

Ive got one present for him so far, and its not a rose, but thats all I can say, he pops on here from time to time :whistling:
#38
A Dozen roses would be nice but my boyfriend never buys me flowers of any type we been 2gether 3yrs.:-(
#39
personally if i had to choose i'd rather get something i can keep, flowers die too quick

I think I'll be needing a passport! A mate of mine has just booked tickets for the Welsh Open Snooker Championships! We are going for 3 days! The first day is the 12th of FEB, so it doesn't take a genius to work out I am going to be killed! I know I don't need a passport to go to Wales, but I will when I book my flight to Dubai or Australia! :D
