Tomorrow Google Streetview will have 99% coverage of UK roads.

As part of my remit to protect, serve and entertain the misc, I ask you this:

Which HUKD member will you try to find, why, and what do you hope to see them up to?

VB1 - Entertaining the nation since May 2007.

if its like 99 percent as measured by population, like mobile phone coverage is... then a lot will be missing, it will just be citys and larger towns
#5
i will be looking for myself,as one of these goggle vans drove straight past me whilst i was trying to cross the road :w00t:

i tried to look the other way

1. Will the original Street Viewed locations be updated with this?
2. The internet is soooo going to be filled with "Spot the naked girl" etc threads tommorow

If it was population coverage, there would a lot more people moaning about privacy issues!

what is just as much of a shame is something the EU made google do regarding deleting images after a certain time

Left alone, google could do all the places every few years and eventually build up a timeline, you could visit a street and look back over many years
#9
hoping to see my partner and our old neighbours standing together outside our last house, when the goggle car went by :)

street view did actually really help my sister trying to find a house to buy
i used it while trying to help her and it really did help
-things like ****** little corners, what are the extensions like on the road
how many cars parked on the road
does the local area look like a dump

loads of things
of course you really have to look a place over in the flesh a few times
but it truly is quiet revealing
some would say intrusive,i wouldnt disagree
a few places have blocked entry of the ******* google car and i dont blame them
#12
Pretty neat, never new they had this before. Just found my house :)

Post your post codes people ;). OR just BG1 so we can see his shack

All of our area on there now (wasn't last night)

A strange feeling going down your road and seeing your house, car etc. Lovely summers day as well everything looks lovely and sunny (wonder if they photoshopped that?). Very clear quality shots too.

I wonder what the long term plans for streetview are as they seem to have pumped a load of time effort and expense for everyone to check what their house looks like.

Will it be of much use to average Joe?

The pics for my road seem to be the same (unless the mother-in-law is round with her car on the drive much more than I realise!)

Shame its not updated... would be nice to see my two shiney new cars on the drive and the extension.

My road hasn't been updated. Oh well.

My area is all now covered - seems to have been done on a friday I reckon.

greg: FindaProperty.com have used street view since it began in this country - thats a decent "professional" use for the service I guess.

It's pretty impressive to have covered so much in a fairly short time!

They have a timeline on google earth now for the satellite pictures for like the last 8 + years. My house only has 2 but some places I checked had 5.

Thats my favourite feature in google earth

It's only Germany isn't it? Not the EU..... Our government OK'd it I thought.

I noticed the google car parked round the corner from me so I should have done something.

Maybe stood wrestling a rolled up carpet with a pair of shoes sticking out the bottom into the boot of a car until it passed.

with this then now google navigation for the uk shouldnt be long me thinks

I wonder whether the next generation of sat navs will be a streaming picture of the road you are on and where to turn rather than maps/ voice directions
#20
This is fab, my house looks great, but I think I can see my eldest son in the front window. I can remember when they came past, I was halfway to getting a fork full of beans into my mouth, so I'm glad you can't see that... There's a glitch round by my mum's house though. You click to go past it, and it morphs to an entirely different street. Good to look at all the places I've lived though, and see how they've changed. There's a whole new estate next to one place I lived!

Funnily enough, i was thinking of something like this last night, either having a stream (Would require better internet technology, such as a total Wi-Fi coverage network for the UK) or having your local area stored in a massive HDD either in the Sat-Nav or stored in the boot (Obviously you would need a few Tb's of space for even your local area.

Could work i think.
#22
I wonder what size file the entire UK would be on street view if you were to have it on a card for your sat nav?

3g would be ok? If it only showed the junctions etc?

The problem is though that with so much detail it could be a massive distraction. And potentially harder to make out what you need to know from it in the split ssecond you have to look at the screen?

It could be worse. They could have caught you bent over pulling weeds with your backside in the air. They have caught my son pointing at them through the window, but only if you know he's there.

Aw, try looking somewhere else you go a lot - like a car park. My dad's car can be seen in two shots, one at home and one 300 miles away on holiday!!
