I have an old pc with 512mb ram and Pentium 4 3.06 ghz(I think) it has a old dvd rom/cdrw drive but I am trying to install World of Warcraft to the pc, my install disc was dvd and took about an hour to install just the basic one, I then installed the Burning Crusade expansion and it took less than 5 minutes, then tried the Lich King expansion and it took another hour!

I was thinking its either the firmware or just because its an old unit but dont know.

Old harddrive and too much junk on the p.c. is most likely, get rid of all the programs you dont use anymore in control panel+ add and remove programs but leave drivers and windows files alone

Defrag the drive as well if you have time, could take a few hours

Nope to that either since I am using a 1 year old sata drive and use ccleaner, CleanmyPC, diskeeper, nod32 antivirus etc.

And my HD is like 4 gig full out of 350 gig available.

Do you have the latest drivers for your p.c., have you had this problem before with other stuff

Harddrives there are different ones, is it 8mb Cache size the better ones are 16 and 32mb

Nope, on my main pc which is quad core the reading speed for the same discs is blazing fast, it just seems to be the dvd reading speed as cds read fast.

It plays dvd movies fine its just installing from DVD

Could just be a slow drive when reading DVD`s

Can i ask, the games that take a while to install are on burned media? or Original pressed disks? Be honest ;-)

If your optical drive connected over IDE? If so, is the IDE channel running in DMA mode or has it reverted to PIO mode? You can check this in device manager.

If u read what he said...

This would indicate its nothign to do with DMA mode, since windows wont switch between the 2, once it goes to PIO mode, it usually does so as a failsafe, its unlikely to switch out of it between installing 2 discs.

I did read what he said and I'm aware the OP has a history of exaggeration and omissions, given it takes a matter of seconds to check if the drive is in PIO mode and it's one of the main causes of a slow DVD read speed.

It would be a bit pointless to install a online rpg off copied discs since you need to pay a subscription to use them and have legit keys lol.

I dont know if its to do with the reading of a disc, since I had the updates burned to dvdrw and then copied and pasted about 1.7 gig of updates to the hd and it only took about 2 minutes.

It could also be a cpu issue since when I clicked on the update patch nothing happened for 3-5 minutes and then took quite a while to install the update and whilst updating CPU usage shot to 70%

I dont know if I made it clear but the Burning Crusade expansion was on cd and installed very fast hence me saying its likely a dvd reading issue.

Some games just take ages. I recall fifa08 takjing an hour on my pc yet I can copy a full data dvd to my HDD in 6-7 minutes. Just accept it as its not like you're installing this game often. Its just bad coding on the pgrammers part or extreme disk encyption to prevent piracy.

I wasn't really suggesting you were a pirate, it was a joke, some people do actually backup original disks, some cd or dvds can cause very slow reading of the disk particularly if there are lots of scratches etc.. more so than pressed discs, but anyway, may or may not be the case here, so will leave you to it.
