No it isn't yet another VB1 thread .... Nor is it tips for losing your virginity..... its a question about Virgin Media!

I had to go and fix a friends PC a few days ago after she got struck with a virus. (Re-install needed in the end after data was saved - which was done without too much pain.) She also needed to get her sons X-Box connected for Live.

The cable modem sits behind the TV and cable runs along the wall to the PC. However, the modem has just a single RJ45 connection. Has she been short changed here and should have a multi port modem/router with WiFi?

I had suggested I just get her a small 5 port switch from ebuyer for £6 - but (a) its another box and power plug and (b) she can probably get a free one from Virgin if she asks.

Knowing how crass it used to be to speak to someone in this awful company (and probably via a support 0906 number!) I thought id ask some of you knowledgable virgin media customers what to expect if she did ring and the best number to call on.

Any advice appreciated. (Virgin and Non Virgin advice most welcome.)

As it goes I did! :D (After doing the backup and install - I had to go back to install Kaspersky using one of my license keys) She dropped off a card for me on Monday containing a £25 comet giftcard. i expect that wasn't the sort of extras you meant. (You dirty dirty boy!)

I literally just sent a text to thank her for that.... which jogged my memory about the Xbox live thing... hence the question!

Guv, I had great experience the other day with their on-line forum. They have virgin guys/gals on there live to answer your queries. Only takes two mins to register then you get link in your e-mail.

I liked your comment. (Serious!)

Would they just advise... or can they actually sort it for her?

PS I'm glad you enjoyed your experience with the Virgin guys and gals! X)

They actually sorted it 100%.

if you ring and complain they normally send out a wireless router (might have to threaten to cancel)

speak to retentions they are the only ones who make sense, i go through to them whenever i want to ask anything even normal account enquiries as the customer service dept is a no go area

As stated by a member above go straight to the forum, all uk based and you wont have to threaten to leave, speak to an off shore call centre and the forum has always been the best place for me to go!

And Guv they will sort it and order a free router for your friend. She will have to go on the forum though as she has to access the forum from her Virgin Media connection so it saves time asking for customer details etc.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I thought she would be able to get a freebie. I expect I'll have to go round there and do the forum thing!

or just ring freephone 151 & ask for retentions. Done it twice and both times sent out the router without any hassle

HAs he been with them a long time? The original modems from the telewest days only had one port, and I presume you mean rj45 not 11?

Dunno how long they've been with them. Our area was NTHell, then C&W before being VM. And yes, I meant RJ45. Got my ports mixed up! X)

Ive just sent her an email with the full details and links to join that forum and written the text to post. I expect I'll get a call later!

I'll also tell her to try CSImans suggestion of 151 first! (If it were me, that would be my first choice... I love a potential phone row! X)

Ah that's why the forum is good if you get tongue tied (doubt you do though Guv).
You can have a think about your next move on the forum.

My calls to CS are legendary at work. Just remain calm, remember the lines and rules for the game and watch them crumble and offer the world. (Well sometimes anyway!) X)

Sounds like someone in my work, the whole place would go quiet as we listened to him berate someone. His call to PC World is still talked about today X)

I almost hope sometimes i get a good reason to call. Obviously one goldren rule... never swear. That said, I got pulled up once for suggesting I was being fed "BS" (and should refrain from using that type of language or the operator would terminate the call)... but the best one was from a bible basher when I asked "what the hell are you playing at". He was scary! (They had twice sent me a secondhand monitor as new)

Its all good fun.

Do you get a N Router? I might have to do that, I hate having to switch off the modem and then my router as well!
#21
I believe if you just ordered broadband with no TV you would only get a modem, you would have to request Wireless broadband for the switch as well. This is what I got only 3 yrs ago from VM. I added my owm switch later as life to too short and switched too cheap to waste time phoning them. All done for £30

No idea. I originally said to her I'd sort a switch then realised she might want to use wifi on a laptop too!

They have TV (full package inc movies and sport), Phone and broadband with them. if they try to charge £30, i will suggest they are told to sling their hooks!

Quite strange really!

When I signed up for my 50Mb broadband I was given both a modem (only one port - quite normal)
and also a router with multiple ports to connect this to!

I am on the cable package - not sure if this makes much of a difference. I heard that people who upgrade to higher packages will be given the new "superhub" from now also.

I'm on Virgin Cable 20 meg and got an all in one modem/router with 4 lan ports and wireless N....

Sounds like you have the new "superhub".

OP - Might be worth calling virgin and just advising that she never received a router when she signed up and therefore only has a one port modem, they may either give you a new router or a new superhub..

Or if it's their Indian centre they might tell you to get on your bike :p

Could be worthwhile having a quick word with UK retentions if they give you any fuss.

Oh well...... she posted on that forum and just been told "If you're a new customer you should have been given a better hub / router. If you are an old customer, you need to buy a router yourself!

LOL..... Time for the cancellation threat!
