Virgin announces HD for no additional monthly subscription £49.00

** first post - be gentle! **

Virgin will soon offer its customers the chance to get HD content without needing to fork out for a V+ box, and the monthly subscription that comes with it.

For those who don't want the recording capabilities of V+HD, the V HD box due on 22 March will offer a cheaper alternative for existing Virgin customers.

Instead of paying £75 upfront, installation and a £5 per month subscription for V+HD, customers will be able to get V HD for a one off cost of £49 plus installation.

As well as access to all the HD content on Virgin, the V HD box will also be 3D ready although Virgin hasn't announced a 3D channel as yet.

If you want to make the upgrade, you'll need to already be on the M+ TV at least although upgrading the XL package will give you access to a wider range of HD channels.

True, although Virgin's HD lineup is growing fast.

ITV HD is coming April 1st (which was a deal-breaker for me what with the world cup coming up). Film4 HD is exclusive to Virgin I think and Five HD .

"Virgin Media's HD line-up consists of C4HD, BBC HD, ESPN HD, FX HD, MTVN HD, National Geographic HD and LIVING HD, with a further two channels set to launch in the spring; Eurosport HD and Discovery HD. Film4 HD and E4 HD are then scheduled to become available in the summer" (from Hexus)

TBH the costs you quoted are not really what they charge. I got the V+ installed free with no £79/£49 cash upfront and because i got the tv xl package i dont pay £5 a month subs. I weighed up Sky but it was a lot more cash, admittedly a wider range of HD though, but the good thing with Virgin is that you are not paying extra for the HD side of things. And like has already been pointed out a lot more is to come in the near future.

Agree - this benefits people who are on the lower TV packages, M+ and L.

You've got to be on M+ at least to get this included in your current fee... I'm on M so looks like time to upgrade!

To be fair though, you can get ITV HD through Sky as well.

The HD channels are part of the Ofcom investigation. Expect them on Virgin soon.

I'm not disputing that - I get terrible satellite reception where I am, so i'm very happy there's now a cable alternative too. Just spreading the news to people in a similar situation.

Or to those who are already on Virgin but were thinking about picking up a freeview HD box just to allow them to watch all the world cup games.

This knowledge might save them some money... (The Humax T2 box being ~£179)
