That speed is quite staggering when I'm paying for 4MB. I've noticed my speed either being at what it should be or under 1MB for the last few days.

I can understand my speed getting cut in half to 2MB if I download 750MB during peak hours, but why is my speed getting cut to 1/4 when I haven't done anything on my PC today outside of watching the Pool/**** game?

Anyone else having similar issues with getting 1/4 of the speed you should be getting?

I really can't understand how you're getting more than you should and I'm only getting 1/4 of what I should. :/

I tested out the speed cap stuff when I heard about it and my connection was like it should be if I went over the 750MB download limit - 2MB. Virgin seem to have decided I can only get 1MB NOW during peak hours even when I don't go over the limit.

Same thing happened to me. I was on 2mb and was only getting 1/4 when being throttled. They moved me to a different upstream but that did not cure it.
In the end I upgraded to 4mb and all has been well since.

Mine varies from anything from 11-16 meg due to it being wireless, I get faster wired but dont want a huge cable across floor.
#13
Well yeah I use NDO speedtest and it reports 14-16 meg and speedtest.net shows 12 meg.

Hey ry is Be* good isp?

Was downloading some bits and bobs at the time... so slower than it should BE.

Be's great, low pings for gaming.

Only thing is if you want the full speed you need a ethernet cable as wireless adsl2 is prone to interferance.

For £18 a month for 24 meg its not too bad, and in last 3 or so weeks I have combined uploaded and downloaded over 50 gig at least with no fup
#18
Very nice i might go with them as pipex is well ****, were can i check what speeds i will get in my area?
#19
How are all these spam posts helping the OP with the problem?
We can all posts our own speed checks but that does not solve the problem.
#20
Actually it does, as it determines if its their isp or their connection.

check samknows website it tells you what you can get for isps in your area.

Good to know it isn't an isolated issue.

I just spent ages trying to figure out how to sign up for their email via Outlook Express in order to get email support. Never used it before and it seems like I'm not going to be able to figure out how to!

It looks like I'll have to phone them up - Very costly at 25p a minute but much simpler.

He asked if anyone else was having problems and posted the link to test. Wasn't that what he wanted?

and how many have said thay are having the same problem :whistling:

Posting speed tests from another ISP is useless as this is a problem with Virgin Media settings.

Oh. So the issue couldn't actually be with the speed test site then? Glad we cleared that up.

Something about this strikes me as strange - The other week my BB was being cut exactly in half; just under 2MB. This 1/4 speed business only started happening after I downloaded a lot... Maybe Virgin have a secret limit in place for those who download a certain amount in so many days/a week?

I had a PM from a mate of someone who's having my same problem...

Virgin do limit it, its about 500mb between 2pm and 11pm i think if not you get put down to 512 or 1meg speeds for the next 4 hours.

Crikey - thats awful - but what Ive seen so many people saying. Others saying they NEVER get throttled or capped!

Have you tried another speed test?

Just tried thinkbroadband

Mine comes back much nearer what Id expect it to be.

I just redid the same test - this time after all the XP updates had finished on my network and it cam back pretty much the same. Strange - cos I do get higher d/l speeds from usenet.com!

I know Virgin cut your connection in half (or, in my case a quarter) if you download 750MB between 4 PM and 12 AM. That's not what I'm getting at.

I meant that Virgin must have an extra download cap in place for those who download so much in a week or something, resulting in the speed being cut down to 1/4 instead of 1/2 if you go over 750MB during the peak hours.

Here's a link for those interested in this issue: http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/broadband/Virgin+Media+broadband

Did you do a availability search on it, it tells you which isps are in your area and how close you are to exchange.

And if possible if you have a router now, post the details on ThinkBroadband as they will tell you speed you can get.
#32
between 4000 and 5000kbps which is pretty **** if i chose up to 24mb

That's about as bad as it gets here. And as i've said before i've yet to ever have my connection throttled even though i've hammered it.

It must be nice in the fast lane.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/196974782.png

Now, if only it bloody stayed like that and I didn't get 1/4 instead of 1/2 of that when the lovely speed cap sets in.
[mod]#35
I know the take up whereabouts i am isn't very high so about a dozen of us have got the exchange at the end of the street to ourselves which helps. :)
#36
I'm going to avoid streaming football/going on youtube/using bit torrent/ddl for a few days and see if the speed cap goes back up from 900 to 1.9MB. If it doesn't, time to give the India a call about my problem... :whistling:

Does anyone have any mates who use VM with this 1/4 issue?
#37
You lot are lucky, the max I can get where is live is 2mb. :-(

Virgin Media or Be not available. :-(
#38
Trust me, you don't want VM to be available. Read the the colourful reviews in the link in my posts before last.

Ouch... It does get worse.

Did you go over the 750MB dl cap?

Edit: Wait, your upload is fine. Did you have bit torrent up at the time of testing?
