What has the broadband service been like recently? thinking swapping from tesco to VM due to the cost and speeds.
currently 17.99 old tesco deal 512k unlimited.
in a non cabel area so would be phone line only
looking to unlimited broadband package, download a few things but not on 100%

I love my 20MB connection and it's yet to dip below 17MB since i've had it. I've been on it since about Feb as i was trialing it and it's great. :thumbsup:

im not too worried about the speed tbh, more the fair play usage.

Seeing as its cable, you should get a decent, near enough speed to what you are shown onscreen

I have up2 2MB and I get 1.98MB

Although they claim to have it in place i've never been brought to book about it in the 6 years i've been with NThelL/Virgin. :thumbsup:

think im gonna change then. ta. unless tesco can come up with something.
just to clarify the MAC code process, i get the number, use it to change on the VM site (to get quidco) and my contract with tesco's cancels automatically, cancels once i get the MAC or do i need to cancel?

help is appreciated.

No need for a MAC code as it's Cable and doesn't use your phone line. :thumbsup:

Oh, learn something new everyday. :) In that case then you will need to get the MAC code but check with Virgin they can set you up first and they'll probably chase the MAC code for you as well. :thumbsup:

its annoying, im great at buying techie stuff and sortign my mobile contract out but when it comes to bb contracts and phone stuff i lose my head lol.

Personally wouldn't go anywhere near Virgin Media for a non-cable broadband package. Regular readers on here will know of my 4 months of absolute hell, whilst I was connected to their 'service'.

As you will probably be piggy backing on BT's network, Virgin will sign-up as many people as possible, over-subscribing at your exchange, meaning that during busy periods, contention will be a major issue.

There is also the issue with fair usage and traffic shaping:

If you value your sanity, i'd think again about going with Virgin.

Personally i'd recommend Sky Broadband (if you already have Sky TV - If you don't, and know someone who does, you can get Sky+ supplied and installed for free!) but only if your local exchange has been unbundled by them. Check http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php - just enter your phone number and postcode; you're looking for sky/easynet and 'yes' to being LLU unbundled.

You can get 2 gig a month for free, 40 gig for a fiver or unlimited for £10. and the usage caps are VERY loose!

but then again sky have had loads of complaints about too

true, but when resolved, at least you'd be on Sky's own equipment with no contention issues as they do not allow over-subscription to their service, hence why I only recommend them if you can get on their LLU (unbundled) service, otherwise you'll be put onto the re-badged Bt Connect BB, with the same issues as Virgin!

Personally, my migration was perfect - no issues: went from approx 128k (yes - 128 K!!) connection on Virgin's up to 8 meg service onto SKY mid (up to 8 meg) connecting at a constant 7600k for £14.99 less per month than I was paying Virgin.

I don't doubt there are issues that some people have with SKY, but in their defence they have been running a BB service for less than 12 months, using a technology that is pretty new (Very similar, if not the same as the upcoming BT 21C rollout - I think) so there are bound to be problems every now and then.... but for me - they're priceless!!

that 10 for the max package seems ridiculously cheap compared to other companies.
leave in a 35kish valley town so not too busy where i am. shall have to call sky later, wouldn't be interested in tele package also.

Unfortunately it's a requirement of Sky BB that you have to be a TV customer first.

But, £25 a month for 2 basic tv mixes, and a brand new SKY+ box (subs for + are free from July 1st!) and unlimited BB is fantastic.

BTW, if you can get sky broadband on their equipment (LLU), and you take the max package @ £10 a month, providing you're not too far from the exchange, you could receive up to 16 meg connection speed!!


dantoe12 - did you try the link in my first post on page 1 (samknows.com)? If so, once you've entered your details and clicked 'next' - under 'locality', how far does it have you listed from your exchange?

I have to re-itterate though - Make sure you can get on the full LLU service and that you're not offered Sky Connect. Put your details straight into the availability checker on sky's own site - if it's available, they'll give you a choice of base, mid or max. If it's not available they'll offer you Connect at either £5 or £17 a month. If it's a fiver - then your exchange could be due to unbundle soon, if it's £17, your exchange isn't due to be unbundled soon or possibly ever.!

just found about the tv needed :(
sadly im a lamo who still lives at home and sky tv isn't wanted so its not an option (although when i move out will probably look at that package myself)
just gonna change over to VM unlimited 8 gb package its the same cost (without quidco working) and a hell of a lot quicker. thanks
