I'm moving from a virgin media fibre optic area to area that is only served by asdl, worried that we will really notice the difference especially when playing ps3 online. Does anybody on here have vm broadband with adsl and what's it like?

I think you mean ADSL? Oh and you won't notice any difference, I play my xbox 360 online, never lagged at all and no other issues. Absolutely perfect. I am on a 24 meg connection but I am receiving 21 mb up and 1.5 down.

As dcx says, anything above 2mb/s should be fine, it's the latency that you'll have to watch out for, but should be fine

I had a BAD Experience with VM ADSL; I had less than dial up speed for 19 days - then within 2 mins of going to o2 I had 8.3Mb, I'm not in any unbundled area for any supplier yet; I'm out in the stick I'm afraid. I definitely wouldn't use them for ADSL, but hey thats just my experience. Good luck with whoever you go with.
