"Read Virgin Media's statement "Sky Tries to Double Price of Under-Performing Basic Channels" in full"

"The nature of these negotiations leads us to believe that this outcome has been deliberately engineered by Sky in order to suppress competition and coerce Virgin Media's customers into switching to its service by denying them access to the basic channels."

It'll be interesting to see where this goes

To be honest I'm tottaly P****D off!!

We signed up to the 3 for £30 deal last week and are getting the sevice installed on tuedsay and we only had freeview B4 and only decided to go with virgin so we could get Sky one to watch LOST... not sure what to do now... it hasn't been installed yet so can they hold us to the contract given the product isn't what we signed up too??
banned#2
No, you can cancel.
#3
Indeed, anyone inside a contractual period and outside can easily cancel without penalty if those channels are removed, as the channels were listed upon sign up and will be gone.

This would be reason enough for me to never switch to sky.

Dirty tactics to create an unfair competition.

Kind of reminds me of British Airways dirty tactics campaign against Virgin Atlantic in the 90s.

BA? That was VA stealing BA's customers iirc...
#6
And BA dirty tricks put Freddy Lakers skytrain out of business

You should have been sent a contract to sign and send back so you should also have a copy. On there is states there is a cooling of period and the length of time you have to cancel.

Nope.

It was BA. As was mentioned, they also killed Laker's skytrain.

Only Sky One, Two and Sports News. Sky Three is on Freeview anyway. Never watch them myself but can understand why Lost is a big loss :(

I've just phoned up and cancelled my NTL/VM package. Took 15 minutes to get through to the cancellation department.
According to the Lady I spoke to the VM and Sky talks are finished. VM will NOT be showing Sky One and Two etc.
They have just lost a Broadband, Phone and TV Customer.

omg!
ive been with ntl for years!, looks like i'll have to look around for an alternative!

Isn't that just playing into the evil Ruper Murdoch's plans? He is taking his services off NTL and freeview in order to force people into getting Sky's satellite service. If people stood up to him by not going along with this, the viewing figures of Sky's channels would fall dramatically and advertisers would force him to reconsider.

Boycott Sky! :x

Lost series 3 is rubbish anyway, you're better off without it!

As far as I'm aware, any time you're in a contract and the product you receive goes through a change you are entitled to break the contract.

I'm not going with Sky, I left them many years ago because of the constant price increases.
If NTL/VM cannot supply what I want then I have no intention of staying with them for anything.
I may go BT for Broadband and Freeview, not sure yet. I need to spend some time searching for the best option for me.
#17
I cancelled Sky because of the cost vs decent tele, it was frankly $hite !!

I got myslef a 90cm motorised dish, Technomate 1500CI+ super reciever & now I watch every premiership footy game, and a whole host of other FREE tv channels (obviously, I dont watch any of that hardcore p0rn stuff that is on every other channel !!!!)
#18
Chris, I want to look into doing that.
Is there a site somewhere that lists what you get?
I want to leave sky, got the full HD SKY+ package and I'm bored with it, never watch the films. Unfortunatley the kids like their channels so I need to get stuff for them.

 yes i will believe u, many wouldnt :giggle:

Looks like Virgin Broadband will be very busy soon.
#21
http://www.lyngsat.com/ - tells you what channels are on which satellites.

Remember, you can view a whole host of channels for free with a patch (currently over 20 english speaking movie channels etc) - but this is illegal ;)
#22
thanks.
where's the patch and how do I get it on my sky box?
I need to know so I make sure I never go to that site.
#23
You cant patch Sky boxes - it is impossible to hack sky at this current time.

The above will allow you to watch thousands of FTA channels, and I was saying that a patch that takes 10 seconds to download, will unlock many encrypted channels.
#24
*cough* Sky Digibox eeprom reprogramming/hacking *cough*

That's theft and illegal though :)
#25
Doesn't bother me.I am a happy cable customer,I will not be switching to Rupert Murdoch's Sky satellite services so that i may watch a load of teenage, lowest common denominator programmes that Sky 1 seems to be full of(star trek, the exception, but seen most 'em anyway)
As for the loss of Sky news,I shall watch News 24 instead if i feel the need.Maybe miss that Jeff whatshisname on Saturdays during the footy show on Sky sports news, but, what the heck,I quite like Ray Stubbs on the BBC.

This shows what an out and out slimeball Murdoch is..........I shall still be giving Richard Branson my business.
#26
There are people on VM who will want stuff like 24, Lost, etc...

yep.. our main reason for going onto VM rather than sticking with freeview was that we would get Sky 1 so we could watch LOST.. I know I can D/L it off the net but this would of been a whole lot easier!!
#28
The funny thing is that Sky News is free on satellite. I mean, Free-to-air, not Free-to-view, so no need for Freesat card.
#29
It's this kind of action from Murdoch which will just increase the demand for the XviDs and strain cables network even further, the XviDs which are usually months in advance of UK airings, only recently has it been reduced to days on major premier things, everything else is still weeks/months.
#30
Stick with VM and download whatever crappy Sky One shows you feel you need to see.

There are countless TV torrents sites that will give you everything you want.

Doing anything but play into the Dirty Digger's hands.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6389015.stm

The head of Virgin Media has accused BSkyB of "bullying" and "arrogance" after talks broke down over showing Sky One and other channels on cable TV.
Virgin Media is to drop the Sky Basics TV package, which includes Sky Travel and Sky Sports News, after Sky raised the fees it charged the cable firm.

We just weren't going to pay a ridiculous price that would have to be passed on to our customers

So are VM going to reduce their prices now due to their cost savings?

no there to invest it :giggle:
prob wont lose it anyway
#34
To quote Bugs Bunny: "you know this means war!" :-D

Well, here's the start of dirty tactics.
I have Sky+ and movies package that I have on reduced monthly payment which is on contract till July and was then going to move to VM as I already have 4mb BB with them and find it totally reliable.

Looks like I will be watching what comes out of this with great interest.
#35
So does this mean were paying the same price for a lesser package ??
No more Simpsons never mind Lost, yes we can download them but thats not the point

Also why are VA still advertising Sky One as part of there packages if there going to lose it next week.

I just recieved this email from VM
Heres the link about the new channel http://allyours.virginmedia.com/fairplay/index.html

Dear customer,

Let’s face it. Things would be pretty boring if choice didn’t exist. There’d be just one kind of airline to fly with. One type of car to drive. And if Sky had their way, there’d only be one place to get TV.

We thought we’d let you in on a few tricks they’ve been trying to get their way.

While we’ve continued to make Virgin Media channels like Living, Bravo and Challenge available to all Sky customers, Sky may withdraw their non-premium channels from Virgin Media’s service – in order to force you into switching service.

Virgin Media were willing to pay an increase in costs in order to get the complete range of Sky content and channels.

However, Sky have consistently demanded an increase that bears no relation to the channels’ market value.

We have refused to accept this increase, since it would mean absorbing significant costs ourselves, and passing the kind of price increase on to our customers that is simply unfair. We are not prepared to rip off our customers.

So Sky have picked up their ball and gone home.

As a Virgin company, we’re well used to the attempts of large corporations trying to manipulate markets, stifle competition and rip off consumers.

Luckily, we don’t think Sky’s the limit.

We think the future’s full of fresh entertainment and communication possibilities. And we’re looking forward to bringing them to you. With all the freedom and choice you deserve.

We’ve launched Virgin Central, a revolutionary type of TV channel, where programmes start and stop when you say so. This is only available on Virgin Media, since Sky don’t have the technology to be able to transmit it. What’s more, it’s available to every single one of our digital TV customers.

And there’s our unique on demand library. A giant collection of over 500 films, 1000 music videos, 100s of TV shows – all at your beck and call. You can access them at any time.

We’re not scared of competition, we welcome it.

To find out more, visit virginmedia.com/fairplay.

Yours,

Sir Richard Branson
