Yes i used to have a problem like this after using the modem for about 7 years.
I had the old silver Ambit 100 modem.
I rang support and they told me it's not compatible with the speed i am getting, so they sent me a new Virgin Media modem.

Haven't had any problems since.

Do you have the new model?

Do you have a router? Routers can do this.

Mines fine always, but when i try to watch something with the online windows m/p my internet dies. i spose thats vista hating me though.

That's what i thought too when i had the problem, because i was using a router (custom DD-WRT firmware), but since i had changed the modem, haven't had any problems.
Might be different for killabyte though.

Yup, same as mine.
Coincidently, my power supply broke at the time, which prompted me to ring them.

Contact support and see what they say. They'll give you a new modem (with Virgin Media brand) for free. Worth a shot.

You'll have to activate the new modem once it arrives (they'll refund the call charge for activation).

killabyte - THANK GOD!!!!!!
I too have been having this problem for the last three months - I am so far on my 3rd router (tried DLINK, BELKIN and now Watchguard) and no difference. I have an old TerryByte or something modem (about the size of a house brick and black).

I have spoken to Virgin Tech about 4 times over the last month and each time all the download tests, route traces etc all check out fine. 2 mins later, I click on a web link and it just sits there - eventually times out and any downloads do as well. Click refresh and voila! its back.

Its very frustrating as it means there is no flow or reliability. I have asked for a replacement modem, but they insist on a visit and I can never guarantee to be in hence they will charge me if they cant get in so I'm a bit stuck.

I have set traces to known good servers and back again and there is definitely a drop in certain protocols but not the IP lease. Hence its difficult to prove and they wont accept my data.

If anyone has any more or can think of how to swap my modem (ie an excuse which they will send me the thing rather than visiting) it would help.

Killabyte, I would go with the others and ring Customer Service for a free replacement modem. They should just send it to you and you can swap them over.

I've noticed people reporting problems with the silver and blue modems that Telewest / NTL and now Virgin supply.
I'm still on my first Motorola SB4100 modem (that's about 6 years old now) and it's only ever failed when the service itself was down (probably explains why it still sells so well on ebay? Or maybe its easy to hack?)

Had to replace the Pace digital box a couple of months ago though (that was about a year older so that too had a good innings).

Quite simply, you need a new modem. I had problems for years with my old silver 100 one and then got a new black VM one and internet has never been so stable / quick as it is now. They posted mine to me once I insisted upon it on threat of leaving them.
