hi there,

just joined the forum. just wandering if any of you nice people out there can help me out!

im with virgin at moment, and ive had major probs with them since they took over from telewest. i wont bore you with the stories there are too many! my contract is one where i can cancel anytime now. i want to cancel and go elsewhere, but everywhere ive tried you always need a bt phone line, meaning i would be paying for the broadband package plus phone line rental.

i dont use home phone and dont need one. is virgin the only one that can offer me broadband without an additional phone line!?

im paying 25 pound with virgin at moment for 2mb if that helps

ive searched about 6 different sites with same bt phone line requirment! please help! thanks alot!

Bulldog did have a £1 for a new line but the service is hit and miss, some customers report great speeds, some say they are capped.

ADSL broadband uses a phone line, that is why you need a bt line to get it.Cable broadband does not require you to have a phone line as it comes directly through the cable supply to your house.

So unfortunately you will need a phone line installing if you want adsl broadband.

Why are you paying £25 for 2mb?
Something has gone wrong there, that is the price for 4mb BB without negotiation.

You're definitely paying too much, I just signed my mum upto the unlimited landline calls and 20mb broadband for £34.95 a month for a new customer (she was on the phone line on it's own for £26.45)

My gf was on a rolling contract and had the full package of all tv channels including sky sports and movies, extra box, unlimited calls and 4mb broadband for £38.50, so you can easily negotiate a better deal by calling the cancellations department, who can give you excellent deals.

I can't suggest any other companies which you may offer internet without the need of a phone line other than your mobile phone provider, as T-mobile said I could use my mobile phone as a modem and pay £12.50 for apparantly full speed internet for my laptops/pc.

Hope that helps. :)

Someone said before they had the full 20 meg broadband, XL TV and I think XL phone all for £40 a month from retentions.

Virgin want you to have as many services as possible with them, so your money doesn't go to there rivals...... the more services you take up with them, the bigger discounts they can offer.

Like I said, I managed to get a better deal for my gf, solely because she was getting Tv, broadband and phone from them, whereas my mum was only using there phone services.

Don't bother calling the normal 150 number and having to explain the problem to each and every person you speak to, instead, call the cancellations department straight away at 0800 052 0184 (who can offer the best deals) and tell them Sky have offered you a better deal if you leave Virgin.

Check Sky's website out and see the offers they have available for new customers or existing customers and then improve the offer further by adding your own discounts and state if they can't offer you a better price, you'll have to move on to there rivals.

If you don't like the first persons response, say you'll require to speak to your partner first to confirm you're cancelling and then you'll them back but instead, call the same number again and see if the different member of staff can offer you a better deal.

Since it sounds like you only have the phone package, they'll be able to offer you unlimited calls anytime, 20mb broadband and free basic TV for £34.95, if you have more packages with them, you can negotiate better prices to stay with them. :)

If the broadband speed isn't important to you, you can probably lower the price a little further but the price difference probably won't mean anything.

Hope that helps and if you need any further advice, feel free to ask. :)

I recently signed up to them because they were providing the previous owners of my house (no BT line).

I pay £20 a month total for:
- Telephone (hardly used)
- Basic TV (including On Demand)
- Broadband

I didn't particularly sign up to any special deals, this was just what they told me it would cost (apparantly TV is part of telephone package, and they do 2 for £20, 3 for £30 etc).

Sounds like you're getting well overcharged! Perhaps you can call and tell them your friend (me) is paying a lot less and you want them to either match it or you're off.

that was really kind of you to supply me the number thanks- i got through quite fast! after speaking to them about all the problems ive had with them and the fact that others have been charged less than me etc i managed to sort out a good package with them with the xl tv and phone too. also there are not charging me the 79 pound installation for another internet line downstairs that we were due to have last week when they never turned up! so thanks again for all your help :)

That's excellent Icey, what's the total package and costs they've provided you with and the length of the contract?

Make sure you do check your bills though, they do have a habit of slowly increasing the price but if you call them back, they'll refund you the difference in your following bills.

Glad I could help you out. :)
